Der Mäusebunker

Friday 20th September 2024, 4.40pm (day 4,775)

Formally this used to be the “Research Institute for Experimental Medicine”, which I am sure is quite as sinister as it sounds, so its being more popularly known as “The Mouse Bunker” does show that Germans indeed possess a sense of irony. It’s a masterpiece of brutalism, anyway, of which no one picture can do justice but you’ll get a better impression looking it up online. It’d be nice if the white ball of the street lamp wasn’t there, but otherwise, the light will certainly do.

The keynote gets ready

Thursday 19th September 2024, 10.45am (day 4,774)

Berlin keynote, 19/9/24

Conferences are not the most exciting arena photographically, but at least this photo proves I am here to work — or at least, to listen to the outcomes of other people’s work.

Humboldt University

Wednesday 18th September 2024, 5.55pm (day 4,773)

Amongst various (acknowledged) perks of my job I get to visit some world-renowned seats of learning, and the Humboldt University of Berlin is definitely one of the elite. Scholars who have worked here include Einstein, Schopenhauer, Marx, Weber, Hegel, Planck and von Braun, and if you haven’t heard of at least three of those, you need to do some more reading.

There is something terribly autumnal about this shot, even if it was 25ºC and extremely pleasant in Berlin today. But here we are, mid-to-late September, and I suppose it’s an inevitability.

First photo from this trip to Berlin

Tuesday 17th September 2024, 4.55pm (day 4,772)

Second photo in a row of the next person along the platform, but this was an utterly random moment that could not be resisted. Somehow this bodes well for the rest of the week. The blog’s second, and my third, trip to Berlin.

Bredbury station

Monday 16th September 2024, 9.45pm (day 4,771)

Bredbury station, 16/9/24

Am I pleased allowed to say someone is a nice shape, without this being a salacious observation? Because this person definitely is.

With this photo, Stockport, the 11th place I depicted on this blog back in October 2011, finally relinquishes its title as the most-ignored-place-since. The accolade now passes to Dunsop Bridge. I know you care about these things, as do I. Overall, 477 different locations have appeared on here — a neat near 1/10 ratio — and I’m sure you already care about the carefully-maintaned stats.

Garlic house

Sunday 15th September 2024, 10.40am (day 4,770)

Garlic house, 15/9/24

This bizarre construction — surely I don’t need to justify the title of this post? — sits on Victoria Road in West Bromwich and as far as I can tell, is a private house and possibly brand new, as its exact position shows on Google Maps as an empty plot. Whomever wanted it building clearly had something to say, I’m not quite sure what though. (There is a Sikh temple round the corner, which may explain it somewhat.)

Christmas — in September?

Saturday 14th September 2024, 2.05pm (day 4,769)

Christmas in September, 14/9/24

It is still September. It is still the first half of September. But the Gospel Oak pub, in Tipton, West Midlands, cares nothing for such pedantries. Here, it is Christmas already, so they can advertise their seasonal ‘wear a shite jumper’ dinners (starting November 11th, if you’re interested). There is something deeply depressing about this.

Apples and rose hips

Friday 13th September 2024, 3.30pm (day 4,768)

Apples and hips, 13/9/24

The plums are eaten and gone, but there is still some free food to be found in the garden. The apples are not very big and a little tart but they will do fine in a crumble. I suppose I could have moved the prominent leaf before capturing this one but hey, it’s all part of the natural vibe.

What’s he got then?

Thursday 12th September 2024, 12.10pm (day 4,767)

Dog at fish van, 12/9/24

Oh, the dog knows. Probably it already knows more details about the guy’s fish than he does, in, like, two seconds.

Pickled peppers

Wednesday 11th September 2024, 1.20pm (day 4,766)

Pickled peppers, 11/9/24

If my name were Peter Piper, could it be said that, on this blog, if I (Peter Piper) depicted a pack of pickled peppers, how many pickled peppers were in the pack that Peter Piper depicted?

If English is not your first language and any of that makes any sense, then I congratulate you.
