At the back of the Loop gig

Sunday 21st May 2023, 7.50pm (day 4,287)

At the Loop gig, 21/5/23

Attended a gig for the first time in ages. A sign of how it has become, as I have aged: gig behaviour now is to arrive early and grab the seats (or in the case of the Deaf Institute, ‘seats’) at the back, out of the way but with a good view. The guy on the left is reading a book for heaven’s sake. But like me, perhaps he has been waiting some 32 years to see Loop play live. This is a band that last year, released their first studio album in 31 years, so they attract a patient crowd.

Come to the Cabaret

Sunday 1st May 2022, 10:15pm (day 3,902)

HBBF finale, 1/5/22

It’s been a long time since I went to any kind of live theatrical performance. The last time one was depicted on here was probably 30th December 2018 (The Producers, in Manchester). In large part we can, of course, thank two years of The Great Fear for this, and that also explains why there’s been no Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival since 2019. But this has returned, tonight was the finale, and as they needed some ushers (glorified fire marshals) I got to put on a suit and go and see it for free. We were allowed to take photos only at the end, so here’s the one chance I got. This woman, CeCe Sinclair, was the MC, and a bloody good job she made of it. She did it while not wearing much, but that’s burlesque for you. A better-than-average Sunday evening, anyway.

Fagernes Yacht Klubb

Saturday 27th September 2014, 12.10am (day 1,129)

Fagernes Yacht Klubb, 26/9/14

Fagernes Yacht Klubb is the name of this band. They play a series of hoary old 70s and 80s classics, and do so very well, despite the fact that none of them could possibly have been born before 1990. They were the climax (at least for me) of the evening’s entertainment at Høgskolen i Bergen’s opening celebrations (see also yesterday).

Technically this is still ‘Friday night’ but as it’s after midnight this qualifies to be Saturday’s pic of the day. Which makes it the earliest on any day so far, a record it will probably retain. It’s also the first to appear from the hours of 0:00 – 0:59, which means that there are now only two hours of the day unrepresented on the blog — 2:00 – 2:59 and 5:00 – 5:59. Leave it with me…

The conference band

Tuesday 9th April 2013, 10.00pm (day 593)

Conference band, 9/4/13

At the conference dinner of THETA 2013, the gig that has got me to Hobart. These guys also turn up, do their thing, go away again and presumably get something out of it all. There are plenty of people watching them – even if you can’t see them in this photo.

Dead Belgian, Lancaster station

Friday 24th August 2012, 9.05am (day 365)

Dead Belgian, 24/8/12

Apparently so named because they perform the songs of Jacques Brel – but I think ‘Dead Belgian’ is a great name for a band. I don’t have anything against Belgians, by the way – I’ve never been there.

Tomorrow, you may have noticed – actually today, as I post this – will be the 366th day of this blog. Yes, providing I don’t forget to take a picture and post it on Saturday 25th August, I will have completed my original brief: to take a representative picture for each day of a year, from my 42nd birthday on. Hurrah! However, I have decided I am going to continue the blog for at least one more year: I’m doing too many interesting things next year not to document them (mainly going to Australia for five months, January – June). The name of the site will be out-of-date from Sunday – my 43rd birthday – but never mind.

What I will do is post a page of the top 10 photos I think I have taken this year, and also some statistics, for those who are interested (or need a cure for insomnia).
