Speaker podium, ICT in Education conference

Friday 17th October 2014, 8.35am (day 1,149)

Speaker podium, 17/10/14

This conference is an annual event, and in its 2011 incarnation featured on this blog in the early days. This morning, I spoke first so got the chance to capture it before the hordes arrived (well, a few dozen anyway). Note the cup of tea.

Fire escape, Ellen Wilkinson building

Thursday 16th October 2014, 11.55am (day 1,148)

Fire exit, 16/10/14

Well-lit Moments During a Day on Campus, number several dozen and twenty. This is one of the secret entrances into my personal courtyard by the way, so consider it a clue to its whereabouts.

The cows know

The cows know, 15/10/14

I think number 5 did it. She’s trying to look inconspicuous, but I’m telling you, she’s the one.

Helsinki airport sculpture (and England fan)

Tuesday 14th October 2014, 3.40pm (day 1,146)

Helsinki airport, 14/10/14

And so I came home again, with my itinerary merging at Helsinki with the last few English football fans who had been in Estonia for the match on Sunday evening. Around gate 37 of Helsinki airport is an art gallery, which makes a difference from the usual duty free shop, but then again they do most things better in Scandinavia if you ask me. Finland sneaks back onto the blog then, 793 days after its last appearance on 12th August 2012.

Global Education Futures forum — youngest attendee

Monday 13th October 2014, 12.15pm (day 1,145)

Pavel and child, 13/10/14

Moscow was the destination of yesterday’s flight. I came here to attend this event, a forum involving some of the world’s greatest and most innovative educational thinkers, plus me. And this little darling, in the arm of her father Pavel, one of the organisers. What is she pointing at? The red rectangle which appears to be growing out of his arm? More likely the other delegate’s lunch. Don’t get used to pictures of Moscow — I’m flying home again tomorrow, though I am back here in two weeks.

Drop-off zone, terminal 1

Sunday 12th October 2014, 8.40am (day 1,144)

Drop off zone, 12/10/14

I’m travelling again. In fact I still have at least four, and possibly five, separate trips abroad to make before November is finished — so much for my green credentials. I’m flying out of Manchester on three consecutive Sundays, starting today. So this will become a familiar scene.

Autumn bonfire

Saturday 11th October 2014, 3.40pm (day 1,143)

Bonfire, 11/10/14

Not natural clouds coming down the valley, as posted a few days ago — this fire was unnatural. But hey, it’s autumn. There’s lots to burn.

Rebuilding Victoria

Friday 10th October 2014, 8.45am (day 1,142)

Victoria rebuilding, 10/10/14

More a documentary photo today than any claims to artistic quality. This is where they’re currently at with the rebuilding of Manchester Victoria station. The tracks are the Metrolink (tram) line, still working (you can see a tram in the background) but the stop is closed. So the commuters can trundle through and watch lots and lots of men hanging about while dressed from head to toe in fluorescent orange.

‘Sand in Your Eye’

Thursday 9th October 2014, 9.15am (day 1,141)

Sand sculpture, 9/10/14

That is the name of this sculpture, currently residing in the courtyard of the town hall. There is a page about it here. It’s made of sand, and if you compare the photos on that web page with this one you can see that she has been revised (she is aging), and apparently will continue to be at points over the next few weeks. It’s a clever idea. Even if you can’t see it from most of the town.

The reading room, Manchester Central library

Wednesday 8th October 2014, 12.40pm (day 1,140)

Reading room, 8/10/14

I was also here on Monday but blew my opportunity for a decent photo of it, so today gave me a second chance. Recently re-opened after what seems like years of renovation this is a classic, great, domed library reading room: too big, really, to get a photo of in its entirety, so today I tried a more intimate portrait. It’s great that I have had the chance to work in this excellent space this week, but then again, so has everyone else — for now, it’s open free to the public, you can just walk in. It’s called a public good, Mr. Cameron.
