The last keynote

Thursday 27th September 2018, 10.00am (day 2,590)

Speaker's shadow, 27/9/18

The idea for this shot came to me as I was listening to the last keynote speaker at the conference, and for me the last event of it, as I headed for Oulu airport straight after it had finished. It was a bugger to get all things in focus though, and when I managed it, he wasn’t quite doing the interesting things with his hands that he was on other shots: so they look a bit like a big lump here. Still, this is basically the shot that I was trying to capture.

End of the session

Wednesday 26th September 2018, 12.10pm (day 2,589)

ECIL session end, 26/9/18

End of the morning session — time for lunch. I chose this shot because I like the mixture of stasis and movement, some people are happy to stick around for a little while longer and chat, others (and I admit I am typically among this latter group) bounce up at the opportunity to be first in the queue for lunch.

Jesús takes a photo

Tuesday 25th September 2018, 7.10pm (day 2,588)

Jesús Lau, 25/9/18

Where there is a conference, then there will be a conference reception, usually held in whatever local municipal building is considered most convenient: here, Oulu City Hall. It had a ceiling considered worthy of documenting by my fellow delegate Jesús — who comes from Mexico, the sort of place where they name their men Jesús, a name I have always thought must be something to live up to.

Autumn foliage

Monday 24th September 2018, 1.15pm (day 2,587)

Oulu foliage, 24/9/18

The further north you go, the earlier the trees turn. Those who want to see displays like this in late September, come to northern Finland. The back of the traffic sign gives nice contrast.

Hydropower, Oulu

Sunday 23rd September 2018, 8.35pm (day 2,586)

Oulu dam, 23/9/18

Time for a change of scene. Finland was the first country other than the UK to appear on this blog, back in September 2011, but it’s been a while (August 2012 to be precise) since I was last here properly. But Oulu is the venue for this year’s ECIL conference, which starts tomorrow, so here I am. This is the second most northerly city I have ever been, after Tromsø. I had only a short time here this evening to wander around, but this hydropower dam, built across the mouth of the main river, was an eye-catching sight. I’m here until Thursday.

This week’s transit lounge (Helsinki)

Monday 20th March 2017, 4.55pm (day 2,034)

Helsinki airport, 20/3/17

I am sat in my hotel room in Tokyo as I type this, but there can be no photos of Japan for this day as I didn’t touch Asian soil until Tuesday morning. This is Helsinki, which a few years ago had several shots on this blog in its own right but since then has become another one of those places (Copenhagen, Schiphol, Istanbul….) seen as an airport transfer but not otherwise ‘real’. How does it compare? Well, it has a decent amount of booze in it as you can see. And there was sunshine, which was certainly more than there was in Manchester on departure, or indeed on Tokyo on arrival, both teeming with rain.

Helsinki airport sculpture (and England fan)

Tuesday 14th October 2014, 3.40pm (day 1,146)

Helsinki airport, 14/10/14

And so I came home again, with my itinerary merging at Helsinki with the last few English football fans who had been in Estonia for the match on Sunday evening. Around gate 37 of Helsinki airport is an art gallery, which makes a difference from the usual duty free shop, but then again they do most things better in Scandinavia if you ask me. Finland sneaks back onto the blog then, 793 days after its last appearance on 12th August 2012.

Now she’s COOL. And this is 7.20am, note. The commitment.

MindTrek conference, Scandic Rosendahl hotel, Tampere, Finland

Wednesday 28th September 2011, 12.50pm (day 34)

Setting up for lunch, 28/9/11_low-res

This wasn’t the most dynamic of academic conferences – I mean, they never are, really, but this was more sedate than most. So not a huge range of pictures to choose from today. I like the semi-random pattern of reds and greens on this shot.
