Waiting for the meeting

Monday 11th September 2023, 10.45am (day 4,400)

In Caffe Nero, 11/9/23

Time to kill before the 11:00 meeting in the city centre. Tea needed to be drunk. Monochrome needed to be used to disguise the fact that this shot is basically out of focus, but losing the colour means I can go for the rustic 1960s bistro effect. Which I’m sure is how Caffe Nero wants to be seen (note: other corporate coffee bar providers are available).

Giraffe café, King’s Cross

Monday 24th April 2023, 11.55am (day 4,260)

Giraffe cafe, 24/4/23

And so, the trip back from London, and that invariably means King’s Cross is the departure point. I quite like the Giraffe café, on the balcony above the concourse — it’s a fairly agreeable railway station all round, in fact. Maybe the guy eating the sandwich might feel his depiction is a little unflattering but at least it catches the lunchtime moment.

Stalybridge station buffet

Monday 10th April 2023, 12.25pm (day 4,246)

Stalybridge station buffet, 10/4/23

I know I’ve mentioned this before but the station buffet and bar at Stalybridge really is one of the best there is: it’s worth breaking a journey there just to visit it. And here’s the bloke in charge. Clare was mildly peeved there was no lunch to be had today but other than that it kept up its reputation.

Cubist self-portrait

Thursday 30th March 2023, 1.25pm (day 4,235)

Cubist selfie, 30/3/23

Actually this photo started out as more of a picture through the window I sat before, as I had lunch: but maybe it’s subconsciously significant that it didn’t work out that way. I like the ‘cut up’ or collage effect: very Cubist.

In Cheesus

Saturday 24th December 2022, 2.15pm (day 4,139)

Cheesus, 24/12/22

Cheesus being the name of one of the many eateries-stroke-café-cum-bars that are now, by law, the only kind of retail establishment allowed to open in Hebden Bridge. It served a fine grilled cheese sandwich for lunch, and why not a Christ reference today — it is his birthday celebration tomorrow, after all. Enjoy tomorrow, however you intend to spend it.

Trying to relax

Tuesday 9th August 2022, 1.55pm (day 4,002)

Cafe by the Ouse, 9/8/22

Despite the various depredations of different kinds of Authority I am trying to affect a state of relaxation, and this gentleman, by the River Ouse in York, seems to be someone I can aspire to right now. I assume he’s not eaing the ‘ice cream for dogs’ though (see sign).

Everyone loves mornings?

Friday 13th May 2022, 7.35am (day 3,914)

Coffee shop, 13/5/22

A contentious statement… Although if given the choice, I would much rather work early in the morning than late in the evening. Come to think of it there’s many things I’d much rather do in the morning. So OK, I’ll concur. Being on Cross Street, Manchester at 7.35am shows that I had plenty to do this particular morning.

God’s Own Junkyard

Saturday 29th January 2022, 11.20am (day 3,810)

God's Own Junkyard, 29/1/22

“God’s Own Junkyard” — and that’s its official name — is a bar/café in Walthamstow, London, but that doesn’t even begin to describe it. In fact it’s a museum of neon; what you see here is barely 1% of the whole stock. I wonder what their electricity bill is like.

Early, but open

Tuesday 5th October 2021, 6.45am (day 3,694)

Station café, early, 5/10/21

A welcome sight on an early morning: by now in the year the sun is still not up for the first few trains. This is the earliest shot on any day, and the first pre-7am shot, since 30th November 2019.

End of the week

Friday 3rd September 2021, 5.15pm (day 3,662)

Stacking chairs, 3/9/21

It’s not been the most dynamic week, though work was done. Time to pack up and look forward to the weekend.
