Swan-a-swimming

Wednesday 31st December 2014, 2.55pm (day 1,224)

Swan, 31/12/14

And so, the last post of 2014. The last three New Year’s Eves I have posted from some party or other and I did go to one tonight, but this is a nicer shot than I managed there. Appropriate too — it’s the 7th day of Christmas, my true love gave to me seven swans-a-swimming I believe…  Happy New Year.

Treu Ginnel

Tuesday 30th December 2014, 11.35am (day 1,223)

Treu Ginnel, 30/12/14

The name of this street in Lancaster may make no sense but perhaps it helps to know that a ‘ginnel’, in these parts, means an alleyway. Where the ‘Treu’ comes from I do not know, and why this guy was taking a photo of the sign I have no idea, but seeing as I was taking a photo of him, perhaps he took the photo in order to give material for someone else to take another photo, in a kind of recursive thing.

Environmental capital (old and new)

Monday 29th December 2014, 3.45pm (day 1,222)

Environmental capital, 29/12/14

Pictured towards the end of the 15-mile walk I did today, heading north from Ulverston, Cumbria, and dropping down to the Duddon estuary near Kirkby-in-Furness. The wind farm is offshore; the sheep defiantly onshore, both represent the same thing at heart. More pictures from the day (and I have several that I like) will be on my walking blog later today.

On the way to Old Town

Sunday 28th December 2014, 12.15pm (day 1,221)

In the snow, 28/12/14

I have on occasion been known to describe snow as the devil’s mange, but also must admit that the 90 minutes I spent out in it this morning, under clear blue skies, was probably the most beautiful experience of 2014 thus far. These are the moments worth waiting for in life.

Beneath the ‘no fly tipping’ sign

Saturday 27th December 2014, 11.35am (day 1,220)

No fly tipping, 27/12/14

The sign posted to the lamppost says ‘no fly tipping’. It’s irony, isn’t it. That bike’s been there for a couple of weeks now I come to think of it. And yes, it snowed last night, if only lightly. But the run of not having been near any since 21/1/13 is broken.

Nutclough Woods, Boxing Day

Friday 26th December 2014, 12.50pm (day 1,219)

Nutclough Woods, 26/12/14

Not an exciting shot. Or a particularly technically adept one. In fact, I can’t claim anything much for this one other than that it was the best I managed on the day. It’s picturesque enough I suppose. Boxing Day, nothing much happened… We got a walk in the woods and some family time.

White Christmas?

Thursday 25th December 2014, 12.30pm (day 1,218)

Xmas shower, 25/12/14

Well, it may have been snow. Only I and the nearest meteorologist know for sure. A happy Christmas to one and all, wherever you may be, whatever you may have done.

The queue for ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’

Wednesday 24th December 2014, 3.10pm (day 1,217)

Cinema queue, 24/12/14

The annual showing of It’s a Wonderful Life at the Hebden Bridge Picture House, and while it continues to attract such a crowd, I guess they’ll be showing it on 24th December for the indefinite future. Remember, ‘no man is a failure who has followers’. Sorry, I meant friends. Friends. Have a good day tomorrow, y’all.

Cluedo

Tuesday 23rd December 2014, 2.00pm (day 1,216)

Cluedo, 23/12/14

You can tell my holidays have started. Here’s today’s board game, with added murder weapons: the vase, the mugs of tea, the Art Deco lamp.

Chilli!

Monday 22nd December 2014, 11.40am (day 1,215)

Habanero, 22/12/14

This little beauty fruited while we were in London, and has several siblings on the way. How far they have come, on my bedroom window sill, since they appeared on this blog as babies at the end of August.

Proud parent as I am, I’m still going to eat it, you know. But not whole. Habaneros are very hot.
