Watching the game

Saturday 18th February 2023, 2.30pm (day 4,195)

Football on the park, 18/2/23

After an acutely stressful journey home last night I had no desire to get on a train today, so picked up my usual entertainments as close to home as is possible. The Yorkshire Amateur League game on the park got some passing attention from others, but no one stuck around for very long — as you can doubtless tell, it was a damp experience. Even I gave up after an hour or so and went somewhere warmer and drier (namely, the pub).

A need for umbrellas

Wednesday 16th February 2022, 3.10pm (day 3,828)

Grim day, 16/2/22

Umbra in Latin means ‘shade’, a sign that the umbrella was originally designed to protect against the sun. But this was not the application required in Hebden Bridge this afternoon. I believe this outrage against good weather can officially be termed ‘Storm Dudley’.

Cinema queue, wet

Thursday 28th October 2021, 7.20pm (day 3,717)

Wet cinema queue, 29/10/21

It is wet and cold outside — but warm and more welcoming within the Picture House. The movie? No Time To Die…. alright as these things go, I guess. No spoilers, but surely it’s time to bring this franchise to an end now…. but of course there will always be the next reboot, ‘Young Bond’, ‘Daughter of Bond’, the ‘New 007’.

Dead brolly

Tuesday 23rd February 2021, 3.50pm (day 3,470)

Dead brolly, 23/2/21

In fact, this is so dismembered I’m not even sure it is, or used to be, an umbrella. But never mind. It makes a difference from depicting the dead city of Manchester more generally. And does reflect what was a quite windy day.

Inactivity

Saturday 3rd October 2020, 4.30pm (day 3,237)

Today was considerably less mobile and active than yesterday. No football, even: making it the first Saturday I have voluntarily not attended a match since mid-February. The reason? Rain, constant rain, endless, all day. Apologies then for the boredom factor but at least we can still go to the pub.

Beer garden, the White Swan

Wednesday 5th August 2020, 4.35pm (day 3,268)

White Swan shelter, 5/8/20

An innovative approach to keeping oneself, one’s beer and one’s smoking materials free from moisture. The weather could not decide what to do this afternoon.

Umbrella

Friday 28th February 2020, 2.50pm (day 3,109)

Rainbow umbrella, 28/2/20

I seem to remember praising January 2020 for its weather, and I stand by that. February 2020 on the other hand — that can piss right off, frankly. And this year we get an extra day of it.

That’s your summer over

Monday 23rd September 2019, 8.10pm (day 2,951)

Rain at Brighouse, 23/9/19

The weather, so glorious on Friday and Saturday, took a decisive turn for the worse tonight — one I fear will not be retrieved. And my first class of the 19-20 academic year is tomorrow. Definitively, the summer is over.

Back to Manchester (raining)

Wednesday 29th August 2018, 10.10am (day 2,561)

Rainy Manchester, 29/8/18

Felt obliged to put in an appearance in the big city for the first time (photographically) since signing off for my holiday on 3rd August. The weather brought melancholy in the morning, a feeling of autumn, though it did brighten up. The monochrome adds to the mood though really I only changed it to address a blob of anomalous colour (on the traffic sign in the background: near invisible here, a bright blue splodge in the original).

The Guernsey beach experience

Tuesday 14th August 2018, 3.10pm (day 2,546)

At Pembroke Bay, 14/8/18

Guernsey has some very nice beaches, including the one we spent most of today on, Pembroke Bay on the northern tip of the island. But these three seemed to decide that the golden sands were not as pleasant to lie on as the comfortable concrete of the sea wall.
