Bad weather in Bergen (but not the apocalypse)

Friday 29th January 2016, 12.20pm (day 1,618)

Bad weather, Høgskole, 29/1/16

A somewhat strange day. Apocalyptic weather forecasts led to most of Bergen shutting down at lunchtime; my day’s work at Høgskolen i Bergen was truncated as a result, and it was at the point of termination that I took this picture, which doesn’t quite capture how foul it was here, though I like the greyness of it (I knocked down the saturation a bit, but only a bit). Shortly after this KLM then cancelled my flight home, which explains why I’m still here and won’t be home until tomorrow night, 24 hours after originally scheduled.

Yet in the end the afternoon’s weather in the city, while poor, was certainly no worse than it often can be here. I originally got quite angry about this, feeling that everyone could have done with a little less panic. However, it seems that the coastal mountains may have protected the city somewhat. Apparently areas futher north today had the strongest winds ever recorded in Norway. But hey, I’m still allowed to be pissed off that I didn’t make it home (quite a few flights happily left Flesland airport), particularly on a Friday night. So another day in Norway tomorrow, then. So be it.

Grim morning

Monday 5th October 2015, 8.55am (day 1,502)

Grim, 5/10/15

This photo may be dull and grey, but hey — that epitomises things, as this was as good as it got today. One of the rare ‘photowhacks’, the one and only picture taken on a given day.

Under the umbrella

Monday 10th August 2015, 4.15pm (day 1,446)

Under the umbrella, 10/8/15

I returned to work. It rained. Well, these things will happen, they still need documenting…

….and then the rain

Thursday 2nd July 2015, 4.00pm (day 1,407)

Rainy Manchester, 2/7/15

Hot and sunny in London yesterday it may have been, but in Manchester this afternoon it was neither of these things, particularly not when I had to walk all the way along Oxford Road getting soaked. At least this girl had an umbrella, even if, like me, she was otherwise dressed for rather nicer conditions.

The weather’s changed

Sunday 12th April 2015, 2.50pm (day 1,326)

Umbrella photographer, 12/4/15

Well, it’s been a damn good run on the weather — a week in California and then 6 days at home with barely a real cloud to be seen. But today…. it changed. I guess this photographer thought there was mileage in photos of wet cobbles, too.

More rain

Sunday 10th August 2014, 11.20am (day 1,081)

More rain, 10/8/14

Not as intense as the burst two days ago, but far more persistent. A Sunday to stay in, so limited photo opps — a mundane weekend in that regard.

Thunderstorm

Friday 8th August 2014, 4.05pm (day 1,079)

Rainstorm, 8/8/14

Actually today was a relatively pleasant day — apart from this 30-minute period in the afternoon. Look in the background — even the Canada goose is taking shelter.

First day of teaching…

Monday 23rd September 2013, 10.00am (day 760)

Students checking map, 23/9/13

…so not everyone is yet completely sure where they should be going for their 10:00 lecture. The girl with the umbrella was intently studying the campus map this morning.

Whitelocks, Leeds (est. 1715)

Tuesday 28th May 2013, 2.05pm (day 642)

Whitelocks, est. 1715, 28/5/13

What have I missed while I’ve been away? Little things, the family, my DVD collection, pubs. Whitelock’s has in the past won ‘Best City Pub in Britain’ awards and is this great little oasis in the middle of Leeds’ shopping district. Plenty of reference is made within to its foundation date of 1715 AD: fifty-five years before any Europeans properly set foot in the country I have just left.

What have I not missed while I’ve been away? The weather…

‘Drought’ in Hebden Bridge

Thursday 26th April 2012, 4.25pm (day 245)

Joe in rain, 26/4/12

The non-democratic British government, and the private capitalists they get to do their dirty work with public services, are so inept they can’t even do the weather right. Last week we were all told that the country currently resides in a state of drought. Since then it’s hardly stopped raining.

It’s not a ‘drought’, anyway. What we are being told is that the private water companies have inefficient water capture systems and a lack of any real conservation strategy. But that’s an undesirable message as far as they’re concerned, and one easy to spin into ‘It’s the Weather. Honest guv. It’s out of our hands.’ No it isn’t. If the government just gave everyone a water butt for free we could sort out a lot of the ‘problems’ by tomorrow morning.
