I have developed this theory that, if I just acquire a hi-vis uniform, I will be able to go anywhere, do anything. I will be able to walk past “Authorised Personnel Only” signs with impunity, throw breaker switches, close public highways. I just need to swathe myself in fluorescent orange or green and it will all be possible.
Another rather uneventful day with little to photograph. After a while I determined that I wanted to capture the number five somehow, and did so with this menu board at the restaurant where we ate out in the evening. Why five? Because today marks the completion of five full years of this blog. I started this on my 42nd birthday, 26th August 2011, and here we are, one day before my 47th. So there you are, now you know how many days are in five years (with two leap years)…
When I started I didn’t think it would be easy to keep it going for one year, but after a while this just became an aspect of my daily diary (which has now been going for 33 years). There’s not always something good to photograph but I do my best. I’m sticking with it, anyway — for now it is just a part of what I do.
As August winds down each year there are some regular events, firstly, I get a year older and so the title of this blog becomes one more year out of date — that’s coming on Friday. To ease the pain of this, however, the garden finally begins to pay off. Blackberries, blueberries and rhubarb in this shot, with apples and plums gathered but unseen here (we have realised fruit is much less hassle than vegetables). There must be a photo like this every year around this time, and hopefully that isn’t going to change however far I take this blog.
Spent part of the day in Manchester but there was little to be seen there. I prefer this enigmatic shot for today, which I feel not at all like explaining….
And very good some of the robots were too — the small automata lined up on the table before him. Taken at ‘MakeFest’, a way of keeping the children occupied during summer at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. A shame the kids are a bit overexposed but I like Robot Man’s benevolent glow.
It’s a Saturday, it’s a time for relaxation, and drinking. It’s still raining. It’s the Hebden Bridge “Steampunk” theme weekend, what this really does to advance the cause of social justice I haven’t worked out yet but people turn up in places dressed in Victoriana. All these things combine in today’s shot.
One for the occasional series, “machines enjoying doing their jobs”? (A previous entry here….). Or just an additional depiction of the rebuilding of Manchester’s entire city centre? If theories of capitalism and ‘creative destruction’ are right, by 2050 this could become the world norm.
Those of you who haven’t already quickly moved on, shrieking, may care that I hadn’t seen any of the cave spiders in the shed since a couple of years ago: 22/6/14 was the last appearance of one on here. Thought they had moved out, but three turned up today under an old table that we had in there. I think the one on the left is the one I got in a better picture of on 9/6/12; the red markings on the legs (though not that clear on this shot) are very similar. And look, it’s sweet. They’re breeding….
