Nibbling on the cobbles

Wednesday 20th May 2026, 5.40pm (day 5,382)

Goose on marina, 20/5/26

I wonder how geese judge the quality of their food. Are some particular types of moss more tasty or succulent than others, for example? Are these particular cobbles, found beside the dry dock in Hebden Bridge, considered a premium dining establishment or more of an emergency back-up, like the take-away kebab at 3am moment?

This is the second Canada goose in a week — but there are a lot of them about. And, to be honest, it was either that or the second heavy black cloud in a week, ’cause there are still a lot of them about too, unfortunately. But it is supposed to be getting more springlike in the next few days.

Goose painting

Thursday 14th May 2026, 9.45am (day 5,376)

Goose and reflection, 14/5/26

To me it looks like the goose is paddling through paint, a Jackson Pollock-style approach to imposing its artistic views on the world, or at least, this part of the Hebden Water, below the line of shops and apartments on Valley Road. Maybe the bird itself could be a bit more prominent — although its not as if Canada geese are bright red, is it — or I might have zoomed in more, but never mind.

Teenage goose and hanger-on

Monday 2nd June 2025, 4.25pm (day 5,030)

Gosling and pigeon 2/6/25

Only a few weeks back the gawky thing with over-size feet would have been an adorable little ball of golden fluff. We all go through an awkward phase at adolescence though, don’t we. The pigeon, meanwhile, is attempting to recruit this new arrival in the war against the ducks, but soon, the goose will realise it is above all that rubbish.

Making ripples

Thursday 24th April 2025, 5.10pm (day 4,991)

Goose ripples, 24/4/25

It’s a shame about the foliage but these are near-perfect ripples, and the impression I got was very much that the goose was just sitting there and making them simply because it could. A human equivalent might be holding a ruler down on a desk and making it go bdrrbbrrrddbrrdd. A pointless but pleasing application of physics.

Canada goose

Monday 24th March 2025, 10.20am (day 4,960)

Canada goose, 24/3/25

The bird theme continues: this is the fourth in a week. A well-lit moment presented itself, and I took it. The local Canada geese were very noisy this morning — a symphony of honking, which I attributed to the fact that it’s surely gosling-making season around now.

Goose couple

Monday 8th April 2024, 6.45pm (day 4,610)

Goose couple, 8/4/24

Goose couples like these are pairing up around the valley’s watercourses. Doubtless within a couple of months these two will be shepherding around little balls of golden fluff that, within a reasonably short space of time, will turn into hissing, crapping brutes just like their parents. But I guess that’s what human parents do too, right?

Canada goose

Saturday 13th January 2024, 12.45pm (day 4,524)

Canada goose, 13/1/24

As seen on the canalised part of the River Calder, in Brighouse, early this afternoon. I hope it was enjoying the sunshine, as it gave its demonstration of fluid dynamics.

This year’s offspring

Friday 12th May 2023, 4.05pm (day 4,278)

Gosling at marina, 12/5/23

The annual outcrop of Canada goslings is usually good for a pic, and so it proves again in 2023. This was one of a family of four — six if you count the watchful parents — who at the moment seem to have set up home on the canalside marina.

The Leeds-Liverpool canal, at Burnley

Saturday 12th March 2022, 1.00pm (day 3,852)

One wouldn’t think Burnley would be on a direct route from Leeds to Liverpool but the canal bearing that name does take a rather roundabout course. It’s a pastoral spot in a town that doesn’t have a reputation for rural charm. The rule of thirds works well enough on this shot.

Walking home

Thursday 30th April 2015, 4.10pm (day 1,344)

Canal, Manchester, 30/4/15

I was sat in the same room, a single meeting, for 7 hours today (bar toilet breaks) so you were lucky that a scene on the way back to the station distracted me.
