The Central, Liverpool

Sunday 1st October 2023, 4.10pm (day 4,420)

The Central, Liverpool, 1/10/23

Some pubs are just superb inside, and I discovered today that The Central in Liverpool, just round the corner from Lime Street station, is certainly among them. Keeping those mirrors free of grime must be a full-time job (although probably easier than it was when smoking was still allowed in pubs) and this is just a small part of the whole. But what I really like about this picture is the way that the reflection of the woman on the screen looks like she has turned into the bride at some major Indian wedding.

Have we only just made it to October? Blimey.

Denholme United

Saturday 30th September 2023, 2.25pm (day 4,419)

Denholme United, 30/9/23

22 men kicking a pig’s bladder (well, originally) around a muddy field, in the rain, up on a Yorkshire moor. But you know I like this kind of thing. Today, courtesy of Denholme United — the ones in yellow.

Clare at the bar (Trades Club)

Friday 29th September 2023, 9.10pm (day 4,418)

Trades Club bar, 29/9/23

A Friday night out, in the kind of lighting which makes taking photos with my point-and-click gear an activity dependent mostly on luck. Great action shots of people dancing don’t really emerge. But this photo of Clare getting the first beers of the evening is at least notable for this being the point when she overtakes Joe as the most-often featured person on here — a status that, all things considered, she will almost certainly now retain.

Spider on bottles

Thursday 28th September 2023, 2.00pm (day 4,417)

I was going to post something about how the truly large cave spiders that once lived in our shed (see here, for instance) haven’t made an appearance for a while. Then this morning — the day after this picture was taken — a “spider the size of a Buick” (to quote Woody Allen) turned up in the bathtub. This one’s big enough however. And I needed those bottles to decant the plum wine….

Paper chillis

Wednesday 27th September 2023, 4.15pm (day 4,416)

Paper chillis, 27/9/23

An upcoming short trip to London aside, I am not going anywhere in the near future: it will be at least February before I go anywhere radically different (meaning, outside the UK). It’s one of those periods where I need to find inspiration near to home. These plants will do for today, however. I don’t know what these actually are but to me they look like little paper chilli lanterns, hence the title of the post. All available for viewing in a window box a few doors down from my place, anyway.

The Moon and the turnstiles

Tuesday 26th September 2023, 10.00pm (day 4,415)

Spotland turnstiles, 26/9/23

Football matches are finishing later and later, now this whole ‘add on every second that players spend rolling around on the floor’ thing has kicked in. Rochdale v Chesterfield is still going on behind me at this point, even at 10pm, but I had to leave before the end to catch the train. Anyway, all of this is irrelevant to what I think is quite a pleasing shot of the moon riding on its little cloud.

Stencil artist

Monday 25th September 2023, 11.45am (day 4,414)

Stencilling, 25/9/23

Someone else’s art. It was nice, too — when I walked back past this on the way home (it is by the Chinese Arch in Manchester) it was finished and looked good, perhaps it will feature on here at some point in the future.

The garden produces

Sunday 24th September 2023, 2.00pm (day 4,413)

Garden. produce, 24/9/23

It’s not just plums…. The apples are doing well this year, as are the leeks, and is that even a couple of beetroot poking up from the soil? Sure is. None of this makes a big dent in the food bill but it’s still satisfying.

Hauteur

Saturday 23rd September 2023, 4.55pm (day 4,412)

“Darling. I’m so glad you made an effort. Those clones! Such a dull look. But…. darling, the plastic bag…. ?”

The second shot in a row to be taken through glass, which you can tell easily enough.

September shower

Friday 22nd September 2023, 4.30pm (day 4,411)

September shower, 22/9/23

The week has been a busy one but ends uneventfully. The weather was unconducive to a spell sat outside the pub, so the drinking was done indoors today. I believe this shot was captured through the window; a sensible approach under the circumstances.
