Portal to another dimension

Friday 17th March 2023, 1.55pm (day 4,222)

Chadwick building reflection, 17/3/23

Normally I would object to photos with bins and boxes in them but, you see, this only looks like a grit bin. In fact, like that luggage trolley sticking out of the wall of King’s Cross on its way to Hogwarts, it is actually on its way to another dimension. The guy’s parallel self also makes a fleeting, fragmented appearance. All I need to do is step to the left, melt through the mirror and I can be there too…..

Self-portrait, after Picasso

Saturday 9th July 2022, 2.10pm (day 3,971)

Picasso portrait, 9/7/22

So precisely has my reflection been split by this bevelled mirror (in Frew’s Bar, Dundee) that the sprouting of hair above my ear appears on the lower part. I like this cubist homage as it was an occasion where the shot I sought was precisely achieved.

In St. George’s Square

Monday 3rd August 2020, 3.45pm (day 3,266)

Reflections in square, 3/8/20

The square reflected in the roundel, these posts standing outside the Shoulder of Mutton pub, happily reopened, after not just the c*r***v**** crap but the floods of Feb 9th as well. You see, we need economic activity here.  Which is why this new ‘local lockdown’ has had no discernible effect at all.

This is a kind-of self-portrait: look closely enough into the mirror and I’m there in the background.

Selfie in mirror corner

Tuesday 7th January 2020, 9.30am (day 3,057)

Mirror corner selfie, 7/1/20

A day on which I got plenty of work done, but which was of such profound photographic dullness that I was grateful for what opportunities arose. The only time I left the house was for my bi-annual teeth scrape at the dentists’, so here’s a pseudo-selfie in the waiting room. One of the few of my 3,000+ shots to come with its own frame, anyway.

Hall of mirrors

Sunday 6th October 2019, 12.20pm (day 2,964)

Hall of mirrors, 6/10/19

It’s not quite the finale of Enter the Dragon but I still like this one. However, how come Joe gets on three times, one neatly in each third — and I’m only on once? Perhaps I am only part vampire. It would explain certain things.

Four heads

Saturday 27th April 2019, 12.10pm (day 2,802)

Four heads, 27/4/19

An abstract, really: while sitting in Preston waiting out a train connection. It was good to be inside on a cold, windy day, sharp contrast with the balm of last weekend. There are four heads here, even if initial viewing might suggest only three.

Outside Sheffield station

Thursday 14th March 2019, 10.05am (day 2,758)

Sheffield, 14/3/19

This week has seen me perambulating around what feels like half of England. I came home from Derby via Sheffield, partly because that’s how the trains work out but also because I wanted to consult a book in their university library (how terribly scholarly a week it has felt, too). This water feature outside the station always looks quite good, even when it’s not operating. The mirrored wall behind does nice things to the sky.

Pub mirror

Monday 30th January 2017, 4.05pm (day 1,985)

Calans mirror, 30/1/17

Not an exciting day today, so here’s an abstract. I like the lines, the slash of pink. Flimsy disguise for the fact I was in the pub at 4pm on a school day, however.

Self-portrait, Leeds station

Saturday 11th June 2016, 2.00pm (day 1,752)

Selfie, Leeds, 11/6/16

And so home again: London to Hebden Bridge is three to three-and-a-bit hours, the bit depending on how well the train times mesh in Leeds. Time enough today to capture the first blog selfie of 2016, anyway.

Eye test

Wednesday 23rd September 2015, 2.45pm (day 1,490)

Eye test, 23/9/15

Well, I can still see, anyway. But can I see better than the viewfinder of my camera? Only I and my optometrist know for sure.
