View from Terminal 2

Thursday 19th January 2023, 4.20pm (day 4,165)

Airport sunset, 19/1/23

At the point in time that this photo was taken, I should have been somewhere over the Congo, maybe Zambia. This, however, is definitely not the interior of Africa. Having got up at 4am, by 6am I and a few dozen other people were sitting on a plane at Manchester Airport waiting to depart, only then the powers-that-be decided that due to a few snowflakes falling, nothing could move. Time passed, and by 9am we were all back in Terminal 2, the MAN – AMS leg of my journey wiped from existence. (Other excessive flight delays to have featured on here: Bergen, Nov. 2012; Keflavik, Jul.2019 [still the epitome].)

I finally left the ground about two and a half hours after capturing this shot. I will still make my final destination, and already know that a completely unexpected new country is going to make the blog tomorrow, perhaps that can be seen as a minor compensation. At least I won’t be seeing any more snow for a couple of weeks, that’s guaranteed.

More winter, with sun-tinge

Wednesday 18th January 2023, 8.25am (day 4,164)

Sun-tinged house view, 18/1/23

No apologies for returning to a theme touched on yesterday — this is the better shot. This was the view I saw on opening the curtains in the bedroom this morning. As it’s the last time I will do that at home until at least February 6th, this will keep me going for a while. The rising sun tinges the higher woodland on the Heptonstall hillside.

Wintry morning, with moon

Tuesday 17th January 2023, 7.40am (day 4,163)

Wintry morning with moon, 17/1/23

A dash into Manchester and back failed to trouble the camera, so let’s go with this one, there haven’t been many early morning shots for a while: it’s no longer a time of the day I engage with much, particularly in the winter. You’d think that some four weeks after the solstice the sun might deign to start putting in an appearance before 8am, but no, not in this valley anyway.

Lancaster House, Princess Street

Monday 16th January 2023, 2.25pm (day 4,162)

Lancaster House, 16/1/23

There still doesn’t seem to be a great deal going on in Manchester, but at least the light was good today. Lancaster House stands on the intersection of Princess and Whitworth Streets, and is a good example of the Victorian tendency to stick these grandiose flourishes at the top of any given commercial building. Does it assert some kind of dominance, or did they just have a lot of stone left over? Either way, I like it.

Sherriffs Way, Nottingham

Sunday 15th January 2023, 5.05pm (day 4,161)

Sherriffs Way, Nottingham, 15/1/23

It’s nice to catch a major road in that brief moment when it doesn’t have any traffic on it. Last time I was in Nottingham was August 2021, and on that day I captured a shot of Maid Marian Way, so as you can see, the local town planners are not afraid to publicise some obvious cultural icons. Doubtless there’s a Robin Way somewhere around the place, or a Hood Boulevard.

Harrogate station

Saturday 14th January 2023, 11.35am (day 4,160)

Harrogate station, 14/1/23

Had two portraits, of people seen incidentally while passing, that I liked today. This one won mainly by virtue of being in focus, but I did like the other too. She is an elegant presence on Harrogate station, though I shiould add, had just been told off by the staff for vaping. It happens to the best of us.

How to rule the world

Friday 13th January 2022, 2.45pm (day 4,159)

DVD stall and boot, 13/1/23

Second consecutive shot taken at the outdoor market, but hey. The guy on the DVD and CD stall takes a casual attitude towards his merchandise. One can either rule the world by wearing the shoes… or, presumably, get hints by watching the various Marvel movies which all seem to be based around much the same theme.

Thursday market

Thursday 12th January 2023, 10.50am (day 4,158)

Thursday market, 12/1/23

God, more of this crud. 2023 has not so far had vintage weather. But in a week’s time, I will be in the Southern Hemisphere, and whatever else goes on there, I’m damn sure the weather will be a lot warmer, and a lot lighter.

Evening train home

Wednesday 11th January 2023, 6.10pm (day 4,157)

Victoria Platform 4, 11/1/23

Made use of a facility that I haven’t accessed since December 9th, namely Manchester Victoria station. It’s not a bad place — when it works — and certainly way better than it was when I first started using it regularly in 2005, when it was still largely a hole in the ground.

But in all honesty, this is a picture of her trousers, which I think are excellent, particularly the shape they make.

Still life in the study

Tuesday 10th January 2023, 10.00am (day 4,156)

Study still life, 10/1/23

After a spell of wide-ranging vistas and skies, all I saw today was this room, reclaimed from Joe now he has returned to Scotland. The implements of a day’s work are all in place. And my hair did need a brush. Outside, just more rain, anyhow.
