Boarding, Tromsø airport

Friday 10th March 2017, 8.00am (day 2,024)

Tromsø airport, 10/3/17

Last morning in Tromsø. It started snowing. I could say I took the good weather with me, but it was crappy at home too (although not below freezing). Great week though — many good things to enjoy.

It crossed my mind that with Tromsø being on a small island, I have not been on the mainland of Europe at all this week. Small islands (not, like, Great Britain or New Zealand) that have appeared on this blog: Tromsøya, Kvaløy (this week), Snilstveitøy (also Norway), Kangaroo Island, Stradbroke Island, Tasmania (Australia), Stewart Island (New Zealand), Wayasewa and Wayalailai (Fiji), Æbelø (Denmark). None in the UK… perhaps I should make an effort…

Dinner, the aftermath

Thursday 9th March 2017, 11.05pm (day 2,023)

Helene after dinner, 9/3/17

I could have uploaded another picture of snowy land- or urban-scapes but let’s pay tribute to the people who have made my stay in Tromsø a highly enjoyable and hospitable one. Helene relaxes after dinner, and deserves to, as she cooked it — elk bourgignon apparently, a new one on me but it was very tasty. With plenty of wine to wash it down as you can see (not an inexpensive proposition in Norway). Thanks to everyone for having me…. back home tomorrow morning.

Skulsfjord

Wednesday 8th March 2017, 2.25pm (day 2,022)

Skulsfjord, 8/3/17

I guess when I pre-imagined the Arctic, this is what I thought it would look like. Skulsfjord has a cool name and sits in the northern part of Kvaløy (Whale Island), to the northwest of Tromsø. There are worse places to visit on a Wednesday afternoon.

Tromsø harbour

Tuesday 7th March 2017, 5.15pm (day 2,021)

Tromsø harbour, 7/3/17

Tromsø is the world’s northernmost city, with 75,000 inhabitants, give or take, and has many of the world’s northernmost something-or-others, such as its northernmost professional football team, cathedral, mosque, Burger King and (the reason why I am here) university. At around 69º 40′ N it is comfortably the northernmost place I have ever been (though as I’m going on a tour tomorrow that will probably be beaten). This view over the harbour takes in the Ishavskatedral — the pointy thing to the left, in the background — and the mountain of Tromsdalstind, lit by the setting sun. Nice place…. I saw the Northern Lights tonight as well but no chance of capturing a photo of it, maybe next time though.

The airport bus, Gardemoen

Monday 6th March 2017, 3.35pm (day 2,020)

Airport bus, Gardemoen, 6/3/17

Ah, the airport bus, a quintessentially 21st century mode of transport: in that it’s a rather pointless extra waste of energy because, let’s face it, we could all just walk to the terminal building. Gardemoen airport, Oslo, makes its second appearance on the blog, but this was not my final destination: I had another couple of hours’ journey north after this. More on that tomorrow.

Bad weather in Bergen (but not the apocalypse)

Friday 29th January 2016, 12.20pm (day 1,618)

Bad weather, Høgskole, 29/1/16

A somewhat strange day. Apocalyptic weather forecasts led to most of Bergen shutting down at lunchtime; my day’s work at Høgskolen i Bergen was truncated as a result, and it was at the point of termination that I took this picture, which doesn’t quite capture how foul it was here, though I like the greyness of it (I knocked down the saturation a bit, but only a bit). Shortly after this KLM then cancelled my flight home, which explains why I’m still here and won’t be home until tomorrow night, 24 hours after originally scheduled.

Yet in the end the afternoon’s weather in the city, while poor, was certainly no worse than it often can be here. I originally got quite angry about this, feeling that everyone could have done with a little less panic. However, it seems that the coastal mountains may have protected the city somewhat. Apparently areas futher north today had the strongest winds ever recorded in Norway. But hey, I’m still allowed to be pissed off that I didn’t make it home (quite a few flights happily left Flesland airport), particularly on a Friday night. So another day in Norway tomorrow, then. So be it.

Apollon, Bergen

Thursday 28th January 2016, 7.15pm (day 1,617)

Apollon, 28/1/16

It’s a bar. It’s also a record store. It’s…. it’s…. well, what more do you want? Or need??

Seafarers’ monument, Bergen

Wednesday 27th January 2016, 2.20pm (day 1,616)

Seafarers' Monument, 27/1/16

The Seafarers’ Monument sits in one of the main squares of Bergen. It’s not the most beautiful of monuments, but maybe that’s why someone decided, presumably before Christmas, to prettify it.

Bergenesque scene

Friday 20th March 2015, 12.10pm (day 1,303)

Umbrellas, 20/3/15

Much as I like many things about Bergen, it is the rainiest city in Europe. This picture was taken in the foyer of the university library this lunchtime. It rained all day, which explains why there are no photos of this morning’s eclipse despite Bergen experiencing 98% totality at about 10.50am. It did get very dim, but not a hint of sun (obscured or otherwise) was to be seen. Ah well, never mind — I have bagged an eclipse before. Maybe next time.

Solveig has a think

Thursday 19th March 2015, 2.45pm (day 1,302)

Solveig thinks, 19/3/15

The reason I was at the airport yesterday was that I was once again travelling to Norway, I make this my 21st trip there since I first came in September 2010. The occasion was the final seminar and workshop for the project I’ve been working on since summer 2013, a nice but also poignant moment because right now I don’t know for sure that I’ll be back. In this picture participant (and friend) Solveig thinks about her next move. She’s the one always trying to talk to me in Norwegian, she’s very patient, which probably comes of originally being from Tromsø in northern Norway, which gets no sun for two months each winter.
