Optimistic stage

Thursday 17th June 2021, 8.15am (day 3,584)

MIF stage, 17/6/21

Since the start of the Great Fear it’s been the cities, like Manchester, which have felt the most alien and empty. Shoppers have come back, but not yet tourists nor office workers. Whether or not those latter groups will return, and how, is still an open question. But this stage, being built for the Manchester International Festival is, to me, a sign of optimism — yet there are still so many lockdown-loving lunatics out there (most obviously in the Labour Party) that we may never be sure of anything again. Covid ain’t going away, anyone. We will be catching it, ‘testing positive’ for it, for the rest of our lives. Get used to it.

Down in the subway

Wednesday 16th June 2021, 10.35am (day 3,583)

This subway under Manchester Road in Rochdale is very neglected, a real hole in the ground. But with the sunshine pouring down from outside, it’s not unattractive.

Formal Sheep Portrait (High Pike)

Tuesday 15th June 2021, 1.05pm (day 3,582)

Formal sheep portrait, High Pike, 15/6/21

A very fine day was had in the Lake District. Even the sheep seemed to be enjoying it, and this ewe poses readily for the camera as they often do, with High Pike behind. A shame her lamb did not feel like joining in too, but one can’t have everything. (For more pictures from today, see my Wainwrights blog.)

A man of two sides

Monday 14th June 2021, 10.15am (day 3,581)

Half a beard, 14/6/21

I shaved the rest off after taking this photo, rest assured.

A dash of colour

Sunday 13th June 2021, 1.20pm (day 3,580)

Everything’s growing fast. Do the weeding in the garden and three days later it all comes back, it seems. These plants — I am not botanist enough to identify them — offered a splash of colour to the mostly green landscape but it was only temporary; they are weeds, they had to go. But like everything else, they will no doubt return.

Under the locomotive

Saturday 12th June 2021, 12.05pm (day 3,579)

In the National Railway Museum, York. Joe used to be taken here frequently when he was little, but with around two-thirds of his life having passed since the last time, he now claims no memory of the place, so as we had a couple of hours to kill in York this afternoon, it was worth the revisit. Thus, York becomes the latest location to hit double figures on the blog: 10 shots taken there now, in what is nearly 10 years.

Dust and poppies

Friday 11th June 2021, 10.10am (day 3,578)

Dust and poppies, 11/6/21

A day working at home, and so a day where, photographically, all I really had to go on once more was other people working. But I like the poppies peeking into the corner, they set off the picture nicely. And, it’s now the weekend….

Hybrid meeting

Thursday 10th June 2021, 1.30pm (day 3,577)

ELIP meeting, 10/6/21

A meeting — with a colleague! In person! OK, so Alex had to stay imprisoned in his magic mirror, but he was in Austrai so we’ll let him off. Stephen becomes the first colleague I have actually shared a room with for many months; and the working day was all the better for it.

Sackville Street

Wednesday 9th June 2021, 4.15pm (day 3,576)

Sackville Street, 9/6/21

No particular message today; just an interesting urban scene. I’ve been seeking to, at some point, capture a train coming over one or other of Manchester’s downtown rail bridges, and here it is.

Sackville Street was the subject of the Inspiral Carpets’ rather good track “Sackville“, don’t you know. The place has obviously cleaned up a bit since that came out in 1990, considering the lyrics.

Obsolete format

Tuesday 8th June 2021, 1.30pm (day 3,575)

Cassette bag, 8/6/21

Nostalgia…. Remember when these were touted as the latest thing? C30, C60, C90 Go! Cassette singles! Rewinding them with the help of a Bic! Spending hours on making compilations of obscure B-sides! There is now one place I can play these; the stereo of the Skoda Fabia that we pulled from the car pool and took to Dundee, hence the piling of what remains into a bag. And when that car gets replaced, probably soon enough…. they will probably become just another format that has had its day, all that information will be effectively lost.
