Watching the world

Friday 9th September 2016, 10.40am (day 1,842)

By the river, 9/9/16

Nice light, but not a very exciting picture — then again it was not a very exciting day. I did quite enough over the last 48 hours thank you very much. Anyway, happy Friday — hope you have a good weekend.

The summit of Howes

Thursday 8th September 2016, 7.05am (day 1,841)

Howes summit, 8/9/16

When I came back and reflected on my climb up Kilimanjaro last summer, one thing I was pleased about was the thought that ‘at least I got a decent bloody photo of the summit’ (I mean this one). After all the effort, physical, financial and more, that it had taken to reach it, I would have been rather irritated had I not managed to match all that with a decent picture. But I feel I fulfilled that photography brief.

The same thing applies today. From starting walking at 11.30am on Wednesday morning to finishing at 10 this morning I have tramped through a lot of rather dreary and boggy moorland, spent last night three miles from the nearest other person using facilities that were basic to say the least and, from about 8am this morning anyway, got very wet. But I hope you like this photo, because to me it makes it worthwhile. How many times do we get the chance to be somewhere like this, and 1,930 feet above sea level, at 7am on a Thursday morning? Make the most of it…. that’s what it’s all about isn’t it. Making the most of it.

My night’s accommodation

Wednesday 7th September 2016, 6.25pm (day 1,840)

Mosedale Cottage, 7/9/16

Welcome to Mosedale Cottage in the Lake District. You’ve seen it before, on the inside, a couple of times (31/8/12 and 15/4/14). On both those occasions I was passing through and having lunch, but tonight I stayed there, having walked 13 miles to get there (and 8 miles out the following morning). Amenities: well, it’s got a stove (but not necessarily any fuel), a rather dubious toilet and a sofa. The rest, you bring on your back. Was it worth it? See tomorrow morning’s post.

National Graphene Institute

Tuesday 6th September 2016, 9.55am (day 1,839)

Graphene institute, 6/9/16

As a few recent photos have suggested, we are entering a good time of year for dramatic skies. I like the NGI building, it somehow matches its main host substance — which I guess is the point, architecturally. Well, my employers have spent enough on it, so it’d better be good I suppose….

The track inspectors

Monday 5th September 2016, 9.35am (day 1,838)

Track inspection, 5/9/16

I have developed this theory that, if I just acquire a hi-vis uniform, I will be able to go anywhere, do anything. I will be able to walk past “Authorised Personnel Only” signs with impunity, throw breaker switches, close public highways. I just need to swathe myself in fluorescent orange or green and it will all be possible.

Beer Hall, Clitheroe

Sunday 4th September 2016, 2.05pm (day 1,837)

Beer Hall, 4/9/16

A good weekend ends with us being taken out to lunch here, courtesy of my parents who had been Joe-sitting while we were in London. I like the perspective of this shot, the lighting and the general symmetry. The beer was quite good too…

Great Court, British Museum

Saturday 3rd September 2016, 10.40am (day 1,836)

This is at least the third and possibly the fourth post taken inside the British Museum. It’s as good a place to kill a couple of hours of a London morning as anywhere — lots to see, and remarkably, still free of charge. Of course, this is us Britons being magnanimous in return for all those colonies that provided the treasures, but hey. It’s a nice place architecturally too. (Incidentally this is also the blog’s 50th London shot.)

Reaching down

Friday 2nd September 2016, 3.20pm (day 1,835)

British Library hands, 2/9/16

What significance this sculpture has, I have no idea — it currently hangs above the gift shop of the British Library. I guess I should invent some meaning…. but it’s the weekend.

September sunset

Thursday 1st September 2016, 8.00pm (day 1,834)

Sunset, 1/9/16

September 2016’s first day was not an eventful one but it was perfectly decent — and ended very well.
