In Nightjar’s window

Friday 11th August 2023, 4.05pm (day 4,369)

Nightjar window, 11/8/23

He was inside Nightjar. I was outside, enjoying the first beer of the weekend (and also wondering whether it was about to rain). I didn’t mean to get myself into the shot as a reflection, but once I saw that I had, I decided it might be saying something about me seeing into the future…. if you get the point.

It did rain, by the way. But only a little.

My lunch: the final stages

Sunday 30th July 2023, 12.50pm (day 4,357)

Lunch at Eagle, 30/7/23

A tasty pasta dish, being prepared by the good chefs of the Eagle pub on Farringdon Road, London. She’s allowed one bit of pasta to escape, but I’ll let that pass.

Stan has a smoke

Monday 17th July 2023, 4.25pm (day 4,344)

Stan, 17/7/23

After eleven different places in eleven days it’s time to spend some time at home again. I’m still not back to work though: that can wait another week or so. Stan generally agrees with this approach to life, I feel.

Ladybird meeting place

Wednesday 5th July 2023, 4.25pm (day 4,332)

Ladybird ashtray, 5/7/23

The yellow plastic ashtray sat on the outdoor pub table seemed to be where it was all happening this afternoon. I helped the first one, the top one here, get out, only to see it then return of its own accord; it was then joined by the second. So I left them to it.

Maggie’s hair

Friday 30th June 2023, 6.15pm (day 4,327)

With 17 of its photos taken in Hebden Bridge, plus one a mile down the road in Mytholmroyd, and then seven more in Manchester: June 2023 has not been an eventful month. Only the trip to the Lake District got me out anywhere in particular. I could embrace the local and familiar of course, but in truth it’s pretty boring at the moment. Anyway, July will be different, at least after the first week. In the meantime, here’s Maggie’s hair, which I do think is quite cool. And I like the way this shot has come out, like it might be a pastel drawing perhaps.

The Monday singer

Monday 26th June 2023, 5.10pm (day 4,323)

Monday Railway gig, 26/6/23

Lately every Monday in the Railway there has been a singer on in the afternoon, starting around 4pm. This seems an endearingly pointless activity, done just for the sake of having music on at a quiet time of the week — I sure don’t see how anyone in the pub makes a great deal of extra money from this. But who cares, the guy today picked up a small and select audience who seem interested enough. I like this shot because it’s one of those that turned out exactly as intended when I pressed the shutter, and we can’t ask for much more than that.

Paddy in the alley

Friday 23rd June 2023, 5.20pm (day 4,320)

Paddy in alley, 23/6/23

Another less-than-exciting week ends with a photograph of similar sort. Life is scheduled to liven up in July but in the meantime, here we still are, Hebden Bridge on a quiet Friday post-work afternoon. Going monochrome helps the interest level a little, perhaps.

Man in dress

Saturday 10th June 2023, 5.55pm (day 4,307)

Man in dress, 10/6/23

After 26.5 miles over the last two days — and in warm, sunny weather too — a day of rest was called for. Clearly the June heat is encouraging many people to expose more flesh than is usual, although with the number of stag and hen parties that pass through Hebden these days, this is becoming a more common sight.

Drinking game

Wednesday 31st May 2023, 6.55pm (day 4,297)

Drinking game, 31/5/23

I wasn’t participating, just documenting. And out celebrating having finished the end of the latest bout of marking.
