Trixie seeks sustenance

Wednesday 3rd April 2024, 6.30pm (day 4,605)

Trixie seeks crisps, 3/4/24

Trixie makes her debut appearance on the blog but as she has been formally inducted into the ‘pub pack’ I am sure she will return. There are two types of people: ones who feed begging dogs snacks and ones who don’t. I am in the latter group, but I seem to definitely be in the minority.

The backgammon contest

Monday 25th March 2024, 4.50pm (day 4,596)

Backgammon, 25/3/24

It was a tense one, but I think Jack (on the left and playing white) just nicked it in the end.

The Crown lies empty

Friday 1st March 2024, 4.25pm (day 4,572)

Side of the Crown, 1/3/24

Several public houses premises in and around Hebden Bridge have lain empty for years. This is the old Crown Inn in the town centre: at my back as I took this photo was Marshall’s Bar; neither of them made it through 2020 and have remained closed and empty since. Some pubs on the approach roads to town (like the Woodsman Inn) have been lying derelict for two decades now. Yet the contradictions of the property market are such that it seems now, by law, only new café-bars and restaurants are allowed to open in the town. It is clearly cheaper and more desirable to convert a former bank into a pub than convert a former pub into a reopened pub.

Self-portrait, Friday after work

Friday 23rd February 2024, 4.15pm (day 4,565)

Albert selfie, 23/2/24

Another day of data inspection and introspection brings to an end a whole week of much the same kind of stuff, so ending it with a rather ghostly self-portrait seems appropriate. Yes, I’m in a pub (The Albert), though not drinking rum.

Hugo portrait

Tuesday 13th February 2024, 5.20pm (day 4,555)

Hugo portrait, 13/2/24

Hugo’s third appearance on here, and all within the last twelve months. As Clare has just said to me, he is an ‘ugly little thing’, but still, endearing. Definitely one of the pub pack, anyway.

Jim’s wine

Thursday 25th January 2024, 4.35pm (day 4,536)

Jim's wine, 25/1/24

I did get very close today to the ‘having nothing to photograph’ assessment — but I did get the marking done. Justification for the latest trip to the pub, anyway: I am now officially On Sabbatical. As I ordered the first pint of this period I was reminded that I do like pub regular Jim’s habit of claiming his daily bottle of red wine. But even that, I couldn’t get properly in focus.

Green light for more rain

Sunday 21st January 2024, 5.20pm (day 4,532)

Rain and green light, 21/1/24

Well, it was quite nice for a day or two. It didn’t last. This picture was chosen for today, in part, because Clare insisted I not use the one of her putting on her slippers, but nevertheless this does epitomise the day.

In the beer garden

Wednesday 10th January 2023, 4.55pm (day 4,521)

White Swan garden, 10/1/24

Those of us in exile in the beer garden must have our reasons…. perhaps just misanthropy, in my case. The two women doubtless have their own thoughts on this. But the weather was OK so why not? Is that even a bit of light in the evening sky? I believe so.

The City Arms

Wednesday 13th December 2023, 6.20pm (day 4,493)

City Arms, 13/12/23

A busy stint of work comes to an end — this is Manchester’s third appearance in a row, and that hasn’t happened since April ’22. By the end of the working day I needed a pint, and the City Arms on Kennedy Street has definitely become the Manchester Pub of Choice. I’m not the only one who thinks this either, as it’s usually busy like this, but the beer is high quality. Note the old typesetting frame stuck randomly to the ceiling. Anyway, I probably won’t be here again until well into January — my work in this specific city is done for a while.

High-risk strategy

Friday 8th December 2023, 5.45pm (day 4,488)

Tom and Jenga, 8/12/23

One might think that Jenga and Red Stripe are a risky mix in the first place, but Tom’s ‘reacharound’ move just adds to the tension on this Friday night match-up. However, though the tower did fall — they always do, in the end — it was not for another few moves yet.
