The sun refuses to set

Thursday 18th June 2026, 11.55pm (day 5,411)

Midnight sun, 18/6/26

I was in Tromsø at this time of the year in 2017, so well north of the Arctic Circle this close to the summer solstice. But it was cloudy for that entire trip — as you can see from the linked picture — so I never saw the actual shining Midnight Sun (capital M, capital S) back then. But tonight — here you are. It’s still getting low, but it is, defiantly, not setting. We have several days of perpetual daylight to come.

Of course it could be a much better picture but then again, surely that is true of all shots where one points a basically inadequate camera at a big ball of flaming helium, however far away it is. Comfortably the latest picture in any given day to appear of all the 5,411 so far, and it may well retain that record until the day I die. ‘Cos when I am normally up at this time? Not often.

Late night on Garnett Street

Tuesday 10th March 2026, 9.45pm (day 5,311)

Garnett St, Bradford, 10/3/26

OK, not that late I suppose, but nevertheless this is the latest shot in a given day since 30th September — which, as this one is, was taken in Bradford. Clearly that city has become my go-to spot for evenings out. I did do more interesting things today than hang around this empty car park for some industrial unit or other, by the way. But as a subject for the camera it worked OK. The manhole cover to the bottom right does annoy me a bit, but I couldn’t crop it without also losing the important red.

Late bus home

Wednesday 7th August 2024, 10.55pm (day 4,731)

Late night bus, 7/8/24

OK, maybe just before 11pm isn’t ‘late’ to some of you but I am not a night owl; this is the latest shot in five and a half years, in fact (allowing for a couple taken past midnight that lose the award on a technicality). It isn’t great quality but it is the only one I captured today that might have artistic pretensions.

The Low Moor Demon, with head

Wednesday 21st February 2024, 10.25pm (day 4,563)

Low Moor statue, 21/2/24

Since I last passed this way in October, this particular piece of random art has acquired a head — and a rather demonic head it is, at least to my eyes. Impressive though. What this is, and why it sits in a yard next to Low Moor railway station, I still have no idea.

The factory district, late

Monday 18th September 2023, 10.05pm (day 4,407)

Low Moor factory, 19/9/23

I would say that there is no reason to come through the factory districts of Bradford late at night, but this is not the first time I’ve found one: see 21st December 2021 for instance, a shot taken in much the same place as this one. Both were the result of going to an evening game at Bradford Park Avenue FC but that’s another story. I must admit that I like walking through this part of town, whether at night or not; the convolutions of the factories and their pipes and lights and ducts, clouds of steam, lights on but very rarely any people — all these make for interesting photography.

Behind the pub, late

Sunday 27th August 2023, 10.05pm (day 4,385)

Behind Railway, late, 27/8/23

Gosh, this year of my life starts with two consecutive nights out. But then again it is a holiday weekend. We are the last ones out behind the Railway, in fact. This picture appeals purely because of the lights.

Hugo no-go

Monday 17th April 2023, 10.40pm (day 4,253)

Hugo in White Swan, 17/4/23

It’s approaching chucking out time on Monday night in the White Swan but Hugo doesn’t want to go anywhere. He’s quite comfy, thank you.

Europe’s busiest railway station

Tuesday 14th February 2023, 10.45pm (day 4,191)

Clapham Junction, 14/2/23

Clapham Junction station takes everything that Victoria and Waterloo stations have to throw at it, and as a result is apparently the busiest railway station in Europe, judged by number of trains. Except between midnight and 5am there can be up to 200 trains an hour passing through here, which makes it more than one every twenty seconds.

I like this golden spillage of light, and the seemingly random fractions posted on the top. I was here late on: this is the latest shot since 5th October 2020, in fact.

After “Late Night”

Sunday 23rd June 2019, 10.30pm (day 2,859)

Walking home, 23/6/19

To culminate a good weekend, a night out, to the cinema to see Late Night (which is pretty good by the way). A late night in blog terms anyway — the latest photo in a day since 1st March. But still not quite a dark sky, thanks to the summer solstice an’ all. Clare makes her way home on a photo that is perhaps a little blurry and confused, but so was I at this point.

A night out on the cobbles

Saturday 22nd December 2018, 12.45am (day 2,676)

St George's Square, 22/12/18

It’s been a while since a post-midnight shot made it onto the blog; my Saturday was otherwise entertaining enough but rather than display more football, here is Clare coming home from our Friday night out (also undepicted). A night out on the cobbles, rather than the tiles? Either way, Christmas is upon us, more or less.
