Mr and Mrs Duck

Saturday 13th March 2021, 3.20pm (day 3,488)

Duck couple. 13/3/21

“Lately, the humans have been conspicuous by their absence, don’t you think dear?”

“Indeed. There’s this bloke with the long hair who often hangs out by the riverside. But I think he’s harmless.”

“I agree. That’s why we let him take these close-ups.”

Uni: the rot continues

Friday 12th March 2021, 8.45am (day 3,487)

Uni rot, 12/3/21

Going into Manchester gives my step count a boost and makes me feel like I’m doing something for the students, many of whom have travelled a very long way to be there and still been imprisoned for months on end in halls like the George Kenyon Building (a row of its windows forming the top of this image). But it’s depressing, all the same. In places, the rot has firmly set in. “How will you change the world?” this billboard asks. The question is an ever more pertinent one.

Window cleaning, 40ft up

Thursday 11th March 2021, 1.10pm (day 3,486)

Window cleaning, 11/3/21

Another day working at home, of such excitement that I feel moved to document only this event: possibly the first time our exterior back windows have been cleaned in recorded history. But then again they are a long way up in the air, and we didn’t have a 40 feet-long pole (that can squirt water) just lying around. But you never know what you will find if you look long enough.

Owl fail

Wednesday 10th March 2021, 1.40pm (day 3,485)

Owl fail, 10/3/21

This is not the first time that I have photographed evidence that the fake owls that stand on some of the buildings in Hebden Bridge fail to deter the pigeons in any way. But it is the first time I have caught one with a pigeon actually sat on its head. The humiliation is complete.

Green and blonde

Tuesday 9th March 2021, 2.10pm (day 3,484)

Green and blonde, 9/3/21

Went into Manchester, which has busied slightly, though this ‘rejoining the world’ thing is such a long and painful process. Anyway, no political point intended with this shot today, I just like the image, though once again I have focused on the background rather than the subject, with a very long zoom, hence the graininess.

Legitimate dreams of faraway places

Monday 8th March 2021, 4.20pm (day 3,483)

St Helena on globe, 8/3/21

Nothing happened today at all, except for the news — still unofficial, but it’s looking most promising — that I will be heading off to this rather remote spot at some point in the next few months, for a research project. We got the ‘yeah, OK, we’ll fund that’ email today. And very good news that is too, for all sorts of reasons.

Birds on Hollingworth Lake

Sunday 7th March 2021, 9.35am (day 3,482)

Birds on Hollingworth Lake, 7/3/21

Hollingworth Lake is a reservoir, and for 200 years has also been a sort of strange, inland beach resort, where thousands of people once flocked on weekends — something that can still seem as if it’s the case. Even at 9.35 on a Sunday, early morning sunshine had brought lots of people out today, including me (because it’s healthy). The birdlife didn’t really care however. They watch us, just as we watch them, I am sure.

On the hillside

Saturday 6th March 2021, 2.30pm (day 3,481)

Sheep on hillside, 6/3/21

As we approach the first anniversary of the Great Fear, Saturdays have largely become the most uneventful day of the week. My activity, or otherwise, on them has become governed by the weather. This aftenroon was very pleasant — so out I went. The local sheep population had a spring in its step, too.

The hunter and the prey

Friday 5th March 2021, 7.55am (day 3,480)

Hawk with prey, 5/3/21

Walking down to the station in the morning I noticed a commotion by the side of the road, heard desperate cawing. I thought at first it was a bird with a broken wing, flapping around, maybe having been hit by a car. Then I saw what it actually was. It will be forever regretted that the focus ended up on the wall and not the hawk; I only got the one shot off before it picked up the starling (I think) in its talons and flew off to enjoy its breakfast. But other than that slight lack of focus I can’t complain too much about this one. Surely there is a detectable look of pride on its face. I am also reminded of this picture: which William Blake/Thomas Harris fans will recognise.

A lonely party

Thursday 4th March 2021, 9.05pm (day 3,479)

Joe's 18th, 4/3/21

Is Joe the only person in the world whose most recent birthday has been a lonely affair, deprived of real contact with friends and all but his immediate family? Of course not. But that doesn’t lessen the sense of sadness that I feel, while at the same time, celebrating the anniversary. Not just any birthday this year, either. He is 18, the age of legal responsibility, official adulthood. Whether that makes him feel any different than he did yesterday is his own concern. But somehow, I feel different.
