In the flowerpot

Thursday 15th January 2026, 11.55am (day 5,257)

Flowerpot reflection, 15/1/26

I’m still marking. This miniature world was found just outside the front door, a little flowerpot full of water and with some long-drowned little clumps of green at the bottom. Maybe it says a lot that it was the most interesting thing seen today. On the other hand, as it has turned out, this is really just a shot of my hands — they’re both on there — and in that regard I quite like the shot.

Gathering of blue and red lights

Wednesday 14th January 2026, 5.40pm (day 5,256)

Police van, 14/1/26

Another day with a photo that will fail to enter the world’s, or even my own, stock of Great Pictures, but it’ll be like this for a while, I’m afraid. It’s always a little worrying to come home and find an ambulance and police van parked outside the house, but whatever had been going on, it wasn’t at our place. These little moments of incident take place behind walls, and we see the outcome but never discover their origin.

The skyline

Tuesday 13th January 2026, 1.40pm (day 5,255)

Afternoon sky, 13/1/26

Don’t expect to see much over the next few days, one way or another. It is, definitely, Marking Season, and I need to save money anyway (doesn’t everyone at this point in the year?). The skies are moody and so pointing the camera up at the skyline to the south of town seemed the best option today, but we’ll see how the rest of the week goes. This is one of those shots where I really haven’t changed the setting to monochrome, but can’t prove it.

David is ready

Monday 12th January 2026, 1.50pm (day 5,254)

Mandi and David, 12/1/26

Three years and four months ago, in September 2022, Mandi and I met David when he arrived in Manchester to begin work on his PhD. Today saw the culmination of that work, and his efforts, when at 4pm or so he was officially awarded the title of Dr David (or Chu-Yang) Chang. Congratulations to him — believe me, if anyone deserved it for sheer level of work, it was him. The culmination perhaps, but not the end of the relationship: we hope he’ll be around for at least a little while yet.

In the depths of New Street

Sunday 11th January 2026, 3.05pm (day 5,253)

New Street station, 11/1/26

And another photo taken at a railway station but not depicting a train — or, in this case, even any tracks. Birmingham New Street, the busiest railway station in the UK outside London, is almost the epitome of a hole in the ground, with all the tracks squatting below the gigantic retail edifice that is the station building itself. I suppose, up there, the place is OK but the platforms are not a place in which one feels like hanging around very long. Still, at least our train home was punctual, unlike the last time I depicted the place on here.

Routes on from Warrington

Saturday 10th January 2026, 10.05am (day 5,252)

Tracks at Warrington, 10/1/26

Warrington was the intermediate stop on today’s journey. Which way on from here? Left & further south? Right, and eventually north? Do we score 45 points one way and 100 points the other? And the wiring looks just as complex as it did yesterday…

Wires to play with

Friday 9th January 2026, 10.50am (day 5,251)

Box of wires, 9/1/26

I don’t think I would like this guy’s job as such, which, thinking about it, would seem to require spending a lot of time kneeling on cold, hard pavements, particularly in early January. On the other hand, tell me I’m not the only one who would quite like to while away some time unplugging and rearranging all of these, just for the hell of it.

It all comes back down

Thursday 8th January 2025, 10.15am (day 5,250)

Dismantling ice rink, 8/1/26

Every year, the square between the National Football Museum and Manchester Cathedral is occupied by an ice rink from early November. Then, every year around this time, it is dismantled again. I guess it keeps some people employed. Presumably there is some order involved; piece number 697 is getting ready for filing, for example.

Arriving at the Etihad

Wednesday 7th January 2026, 6.35pm (day 5,249)

Etihad arrival, 7/1/26

Another picture of fans arriving at a football stadium, but unlike Sunday, at least we saw a game today. Manchester City v Brighton was my first Premier League game since April 2022 and only the second in the last six years. Habits have changed…. but I suppose I still feel a certain sense of allegiance. And no, not to Manchester City. It was nice to see some old mates in the away end tonight, £30 for a ticket was an acceptable price and a 1-1 draw was a reasonable result. I pick this shot because of its Blade Runner-like qualities, as much as anything. Let’s turn on all those lights…. and worry about the electricity bills later, shall we?

Taking the pressure

Tuesday 6th January 2026, 2.35pm (day 5,248)

Blood pressure, 6/1/26

It’s the new year, and thoughts turn to those of health and happiness in the months to come. I think my blood pressure is OK, a little on the high side perhaps but nothing really major to worry about.
