Whipping granny

Wednesday 21st May 2025, 4.20pm (day 5,018)

Whipping granny, 21/5/25

At least, I assume it’s his granny. She was bearing it all stoically enough.

Bubble magnet

Tuesday 20th May 2025, 5.50pm (day 5,017)

Bubbles on straw, 20/5/25

I do not know exactly what principle of physics this straw is demonstrating, but I will take a stab at it: whether because it is black or not, it has absorbed and retained a certain amount of heat. Enough, anyway, to keep the liquid around it just that little bit warmer and thus precipitate out the bubbles. Sounds plausible, right? But I am guessing.

Signs of doom

Monday 19th May 2025, 11.00am (day 5,016)

Roadworks, 19/5/25

It’s time for the annual appearance of the “Person Struggling with Umbrella” sign, and all that entails for traffic up and down the Keighley Road. I haven’t driven a car on this island since last August (the only plae I have been behind the wheel was on Ascension), and I’m just fine with that.

The buildings of Edinburgh

Sunday 18th May 2025, 11.10am (day 5,015)

Edinburgh buildings, 18/5/25

Scotland doesn’t just do good rural landscapes, but good urban ones too, particularly Edinburgh. A half-hour stopover in Waverley station on the way home allowed a glimpse of this. For once, I don’t mind the lamppost, it seems to fit in just right, as if the light is responsible for the shadow in the gap below it.

The Clyde

Saturday 17th May 2025, 1.20pm (day 5,014)

The Clyde, 17/5/24

When I realised the weather forecast was going to stay much the same — that is, warm and sunny — throughout our visit to Scotland, a walk became by far the best choice for a Saturday activity. It wasn’t too hard to rearrange things accordingly, and I did not regret doing so. Below, the River Clyde, winding its way from Glasgow, over in the distance, to the sea, and crossed here by the Erskine Bridge. More photos and details of the day are on my County Tops blog.

Degree project (non-digital)

Friday 16th May 2025, 1.55pm (day 5,013)

Graduate show diorama, 16/5/25

The point of travelling to Scotland was to be in attendance for at least one of the sessions of Joe’s final year exhibition, or should I say the Abertay Digital Graduate Show. Not that this piece of artwork is ‘digital’, but it seems that the BA Games Design and Production projects can be in whatever medium one likes. At least you can’t get an AI to do this kind of stuff. Good luck to them all.

Somewhere in Fife

Thursday 15th May 2025, 7.50pm (day 5,012)

View from Fife train, 15/5/25

The last time I posted a picture taken in Scotland was from the crossing of the Forth on 30th May last year. I crossed it again today, and nearly went for the same theme: whether one uses the road or the rail bridge, the views are invariably excellent. But this one isn’t bad, either, about half an hour further along the journey towards Dundee — and towards sunset. I think this was taken from somewhere near Markinch station; somewhere in Fife, anyway. What’s the building? No idea.

Pre-match atmosphere

Wednesday 14th May 2025, 7.45pm (day 5,011)

Halifax fans, 14/5/25

Two minutes to go before kick-off and someone, somewhere lets off a flare to add to the atmosphere. The two guys in the centre look pretty tense about it all. And considering their team are about to concede three soft goals in the first 12 minutes of the game that is to come, they were justified — not that they knew that at this point. Final score, Oldham Athletic 4, Halifax Town 0. This lot all go home now and wait for next season.

Jackdaw in the sunshine

Tuesday 13th May 2025, 5.50pm (day 5,010)

Jackdaw, 13/5/25

The sunshine continues: if you hear any Britons complaining about the weather this spring, you have my permission to scoff. This jackdaw seems to be enjoying it just like the rest of us.

The latest planning exercise

Monday 12th May 2025, 10.15am (day 5,009)

Planning board, 12/5/25

Down the years I have acknowledged our Clare’s planning fetish. I share it, to some extent, but I tend to stick to one medium (a diary) whereas C.’s various lists, diagrams, files and so on spread and multiply. This board has just appeared in her half of the attic/office. This is planning as board game, as one of those models football managers or Napoleon would use to organise their troop movements. And it didn’t even appear until May — though I am guessing we will be seeing more of this even after 2025 has played out.
