Monday morning in Oxford

Monday 18th July 2022, 8.45am (day 3,980)

Ship Street, Oxford, 18/7/22

My perambulation around the southern parts of England continues. Academic that I am you might have expected Oxford — undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest seats of learning — to have featured on here over the last 11 years (nearly). Its rival Cambridge has done so, and I have to say I do find that the more attractive place of the two. Cambridge has rural charm whereas Oxford is really just a middling-sized city with, admittedly, some pretty fine buildings. But on a sunny, pleasant Monday morning, it’ll do.

The Naked Rambler of Stokenchurch (rear view)

Sunday 17th July 2022, 11.20am (day 3,979)

Naked rambler, 17/7/22

Like this gentleman, I felt that a ramble in the Chiltern hills was a fine way of spending a warm, sunny Sunday morning (and I got another County Top out of my efforts, if you want to read more). Unlike this gentleman, however, I did it in clothing: this bloke really was stark bollock naked other thank his pack and shoes. This shot is a rear view only but I can assure you he was letting it all hang out. I hope he had sunscreen. He looked rather grumpy about it, all things considered.

Drying cabinet

Saturday 16th July 2022, 12.30pm (day 3,978)

Drying cabinet, 16/7/22

This is not the sort of thing you see in every pub visited. But The Griffin, in Amersham, certainly takes its food preparation seriously. The ray in the back of this drying cabinet was enormous. However, I hold back from recommending this establishment thanks to its charging me £7 for a pint, which even for the Home Counties is outrageous.

The Post Office Tower

Friday 15th July 2022, 6.30pm (day 3,977)

Post Office Tower, 15/7/22

I’m back in London again and here’s one of its best-known landmarks. Actually this hasn’t been called the ‘Post Office Tower’ for a very long time — these days it’s the ‘BT Tower’. But for my generation this always was the Post Office Tower and always will be. Tallest building in the UK from when it was built in 1964 until 1980. There’s still something cute about it; it reminds me of a big light bulb, for some reason.

Morning train, Rochdale

Thursday 14th July 2022, 7.35am (day 3,976)

Passengers at Rochdale, 14/7/22

Passengers in various states of thought and repose, as the train pulled into Rochdale on the way into work. Or, I suspect for the guy immediately opposite me, home after a rather heavy night.

Plasticat

Wednesday 13th July 2022, 4.05pm (day 3,975)

Plastic cat, 13/7/21

It is plastic, but it does look very realistic, particularly sat on a cushion outside the pub in the sunshine. Many passers-by were seen doing double-takes. Why was it there? Just one element in a range of junk (hence the pile behind it), passing through.

Graduation photography

Tuesday 12th July 2022, 3.05pm (day 3,974)

I’d say ‘it’s that time of year again’ but this is the first mid-July since 2019 where there have been such scenes around campus. Ceremony does matter: it’s good to see these return.

Temporary caring responsibilities

Monday 11th July 2022, 7.50am (day 3,973)

“Who are you then? I haven’t seen you before.” Nope; and they won’t see me again: but this morning I found myself temporarily responsible for these (roughly) six-week-old chickens, living still in their plastic incubator and definitely in need of plenty of liquid on these hot days. I conducted roll call, watered them and left them to it.

Dundee station, Sunday morning

Sunday 10th July 2022, 10.50am (day 3,972)

Dundee station, 10/7/22

For the duration of this visit, and certainly today, its final morning, Dundee has basked in balmy sunshine that is atypical for the city. It contributed to a pleasantly chilled out wait for the train heading back south, which I think this couple epitomise. (My journey was fine all the way to Bradford, after which it descended into a farce of the kind only Northern Rail seem able to manufacture, but that’s another story, hours in the future.)

Self-portrait, after Picasso

Saturday 9th July 2022, 2.10pm (day 3,971)

Picasso portrait, 9/7/22

So precisely has my reflection been split by this bevelled mirror (in Frew’s Bar, Dundee) that the sprouting of hair above my ear appears on the lower part. I like this cubist homage as it was an occasion where the shot I sought was precisely achieved.
