Sand sculptor by Holborn station

Friday 8th January 2016, 4.10pm (day 1,597)

Sand sculptor, 8/1/16

A day’s work in London to finish off the week (and it did finish me off). This creation was being put together outside Holborn tube station as I passed, and was proving quite a profitable enterprise for its sculptor — justifiably.

Audience for keynote speech

Friday 8th January 2016, 9.35am (day 1,596)

Before keynote, 7/1/16

My, have all these people come to hear me talk? Well, me and some other people anyway. But I was on first. Ange (far left) is introducing me at this point. It went very well, and a keynote at Cambridge, I guess there’s a certain distinction in that.

Punts on the Cam, at St John’s College

Wednesday 6th January 2016, 3.15pm (day 1,595)

River Cam, 6/1/16

By many reckonings, the University of Cambridge is considered the best in the world. Today was my first-ever visit there, and what struck me is that it’s so goddamn small. Even Oxford feels like a city, but this place is just a little town in the Fens. Beautiful though, even on another grey January day (I’ve literally seen ten minutes of sunshine all year thus far). I thought I might struggle to catch a photo of a punt, but there were loads of them on the River Cam, including two for the price of one in this shot. Tourists on the right, but the guy on the left does look as if he is just using the punt as your basic local transport option.

St. Peter’s Square

Tuesday 5th January 2015, 2.35pm (day 1,594)

St. Peter's Square, 5/1/16

The building works in St. Peter’s Square, Manchester, do not seem to have advanced a huge amount since they were pictured nearly a year ago (26/1/15). Never mind, they remain good photographic subjects. I like this one because it seems like a collage of shapes and textures, but there is still an underlying logic to it.

Tattooist’s, Manchester

Monday 4th January 2016, 10.30am (day 1,593)

Tattitude entrance, 4/1/16

How awesome is this. I want to go and get my next tattoo at this place simply because of this mural. Which, I suppose, is the point, but it doesn’t make it any less impressive.

Joe (St Pauli top)

Sunday 3rd January 2016, 10.50am (day 1,592)

Joe in gym, 3/1/16

Joe was born in March 2003, meaning that very soon I will be starting on my first and, assuredly, last experience of being the father of a teenager. He looks ready for it; no idea if I am. At least his St Pauli top (two years and five months old – evidence here) still fits. This was a photowhack — the only picture I took today.

Cinema reopened (balcony only)

Saturday 2nd January 2015, 4.35pm (day 1,591)

Cinema reopened, 2/1/16

Good news… the Picture House has reopened. Just the balcony — visible here is the front part of the ground floor, or stalls, where now no seats remain. The heating’s not working either. But at least this particular community asset has survived.

Happy Moo Year

Friday 1st January 2016, 11.35am (day 1,590)

Cow above Hebden, 1/1/16

The first morning of 2016 was a rather chilly and grey one but it was still good to drag the family up a nearby hill and then buy them a pub lunch as compensation. Pic taken on the way round; the cow virtually demanding that I work on its close-ups.

Busy behind the bar

Thursday 31st December 2015, 7.35pm (day 1,589)

Old Gate bar, 31/12/15

Here is where we have just spent New Year’s Eve. and this picture is worth posting if only because it depicts a Hebden Bridge pub that has managed to open despite the floods. Up yours to the last, depressing week of 2015 and here is hoping for better weather in 2016, at least. But let’s not be negative –  a happy New Year, whatever you have done, whatever you might wish.

Reliving it

Friday 30th December 2015, 2.35pm (day 1,588)

Playing Galaxian, 30/12/15

We could mock this guy for reliving the glories of his youth, but seeing as just after this I punched the air and shouted ‘Yes! High Score!’ after beating all-comers at Asteroids, I have no leg to stand on. Pictured at the National Media Museum, Bradford, this afternoon’s entertainment.
