The patient angler

Sunday 2nd September 2012, 11.25am (day 374)

Heron, 2/9/12

When I was  in the Lousiana swamp a few weeks back I saw alligators – we definitely don’t have them in Yorkshire. Cypresses and wolf spiders, spotted on the tour, are also not usually seen round here. But when the guide pointed out a sleek, tall drink of water of a bird with a beak like a dagger, a fish’s worst nightmare – oh yeah, we have them in Yorkshire. Really? Yes, really. Herons often fish in the river that runs through the centre of town. And here is one, just to prove it. Handsome beast, isn’t it?

Just before kick-off

Saturday 1st September 2012, 2.55pm (day 373)

Burnley v Brighton, 1/9/12

As I move into the second year of this blog, some things are going to recur. Some of them at the same time each year (tomorrow, for example, Clare is running Alice’s Run again), others at different times, like this one. Here we are at Turf Moor, Burnley, for this season’s match-up between Burnley FC and my beloved Brighton & Hove Albion. Last season it took place in April, on a cold, grey day – and the match (and result) lived up to those conditions. Today, earlier in the season, much sunnier and warmer, and a happier trip for the travelling Seagulls. Burnley 1, Brighton 3.

Lunch in Mosedale Cottage

Friday 31st August 2012, 11.45am (day 372)

Mosedale Cottage, 31/8/12

Another walk today. I snuck it in based on a good weather forecast in the morning, and so it was, but after noon we went back to the same old rubbish. Never mind, it was good while it lasted.

A distinctive feature of the walk was being able to have my lunch sat inside on a very comfortable couch instead of outside on some damp mossy rock somewhere. The reason was the existence of Mosedale Cottage, a ‘mountain hut’ or bothy, some three or so miles from any other building. When I turned up there were these three shepherds having lunch there as well, and why wouldn’t you, it’s definitely the most comfortable place to have lunch for miles around. We shared the room for 10 minutes, moved on. It was as good a spot for lunch as I’ve managed on any Lake District walk.

Enough already

Wednesday 29th August 2012, 3.10pm (day 370)

AQA building, 29/8/12

Another one of those days: look up, see a sky, want to move to a different city. Half an hour after this came another intense cloudburst: until a couple of months ago I’d have said ‘I’d never seen anything like it before’ but of course we have. (The building is the AQA headquarters on the Manchester campus.)

Late August shadows

Tuesday 28th August 2012, 9.35am (day 369)

Shadows, 28/8/12

The wildly optimistic part of me still thinks that come September maybe we will get a run of nice warm and sunny days, but even if September in the UK can often be fine that is probably clutching at straws. The day was a largely pleasant one but there was just something autumnal about the morning, a crispness in the air that foretells the cold to come.

New camera (inappropriately wrapped)

Monday 27th August 2012, 3.35pm (day 368)

Not an Xmas present, 27/8/12

In this box is my new camera. All but two of the photos on this blog so far have been taken with my Fujifilm Finepix JZ210 but the zoom has been increasingly unreliable lately and it’s being gracefully retired with honours. This may be the last picture taken with it. It’s done a good job. Consider this pic the tribute to it.

I did ask Clare why she thought to wrap its replacement in High School Musical paper that said ‘Happy Christmas’ on it but the answer was not a very satisfactory one. (Incidentally I didn’t open this yesterday because Joe was not around and he wanted to be in on it.)

Husky Convention

Sunday 26th August 2012, 4.10pm (day 367)

Husky, 26/8/12

So, it’s my birthday. I’m 43. The name of this blog is now out of date but I might as well keep it. I could have tried to post a picture that represented the celebrations somehow but I didn’t do anything particularly different – although the afternoon was a fun one and spent with friends. While sitting at the Shoulder of Mutton pub in the centre of Hebden Bridge there was this parade of husky dogs, there must have been some kind of meeting of an owners’ club as they were everywhere. And why not show them off, because they were truly beautiful creatures, and obliging models too. So we’ll start the second year with a picture of one of them.
