Near-normality (Victoria station)

Thursday 5th August 2021, 10.15am (day 3,633)

Replacement bus sign, 5/8/21

I had a work meeting today, that included lunch, face-to-face with two other people. The rail service is having its annual summer ‘upgrading’ spasm and so my journey to and from this meeting was a complex — but not, it should be said, unpunctual — tangle of three different trains, two buses and a taxi.

All in all then, a sense of normality returns (perhaps leaving out the bit about punctuality).

Not a wedding photograph

Monday 19th July 2021, 2.05pm (day 3,616)

Not a wedding photo, 19/7/21

Photographer and bride… but there was no groom in sight, so either these two were preparing some photos for a wedding at a later date, or this was a fashion shoot of some kind. The lump of rock behind is the big glacial boulder that stands in the Old Quadrangle of the University of Manchester.

Taking it easy

Saturday 17th July 2021, 2.50pm (day 3,614)

Crashed out, Penistone

It was a hot day today, by British standards — whether at Penistone Church FC or anywhere else. I think this baby girl was taking the right approach to it all, frankly.

In the pub, Friday afternoon

Friday 18th June 2021, 4.30pm (day 3,585)

Diabetic arm, 18/6/21

I’m posting a day late and Friday seems a long time ago now after a busy Saturday. I like this picture mostly just for the shapes made, but the woman’s blood sugar monitor also fascinated me. I’ve never seen an implant like that before.

Dust and poppies

Friday 11th June 2021, 10.10am (day 3,578)

Dust and poppies, 11/6/21

A day working at home, and so a day where, photographically, all I really had to go on once more was other people working. But I like the poppies peeking into the corner, they set off the picture nicely. And, it’s now the weekend….

Life in the Village

Thursday 22nd April 2021, 4.45pm (day 3,528)

Waiter in Village, 22/4/21

It’s been a hard few months. Photographically I mean (of course there have been other reasons). But lockdown, in all its arbitrary ways, has drained the land of life, at a time of year when we really benefit from the company of others and the things they bring. In that respect, at least, things are slowly looking up. Manchester now seems to have some energy back, as befits a big city. Finally.

The other photographer

Saturday 10th April 2021, 2.05pm (day 3,516)

Football photographer, 10/4/21

That’s a big lens. Perhaps he’s compensating for something.

We queue for salvation

Thursday 18th March 2021, 3.40pm (day 3,493)

Vaccination centre, 18/3/21

We turned up at our appointed time. We stood at the ends of our appointed lines, waiting to get the call. Some of us read the information sheets we were given, which seemed (to me) to say little more than ‘in the end, we don’t really know what this might do’. Some of us did not. Yes folks, I’ve been vaccinated.

Green and blonde

Tuesday 9th March 2021, 2.10pm (day 3,484)

Green and blonde, 9/3/21

Went into Manchester, which has busied slightly, though this ‘rejoining the world’ thing is such a long and painful process. Anyway, no political point intended with this shot today, I just like the image, though once again I have focused on the background rather than the subject, with a very long zoom, hence the graininess.

Manchester, with sun and people

Tuesday 2nd March 2021, 2.20pm (day 3,477)

Sun on campus, 2/3/21

Misty and cold at home, but sunny and mild in Manchester all day, sun which filled the public spaces of campus with students, at least compared to how it’s been for the last two months. ‘Without making a political point out of it, the idea of ‘lockdown’ is just no longer being confirmed by observation. Small businesses are still being shafted, but otherwise, many people have obviously just returned to living their lives.
