Up it goes

Tuesday 24th September, 2.50pm (day 761)

Girders, 24/9/13

These girders have been erected over the last two weeks by the unexpectedly large object. They are the skeleton of a new extension being built below our house by the owners of the Nutclough Mill, a building you have seen several times before but which will be irrevocably changed by this project. Is this a good thing? Ask us when it’s finished.

First day of teaching…

Monday 23rd September 2013, 10.00am (day 760)

Students checking map, 23/9/13

…so not everyone is yet completely sure where they should be going for their 10:00 lecture. The girl with the umbrella was intently studying the campus map this morning.

The back of the gym

Sunday 22nd September 2013, 3.40pm (day 759)

Fire escape, 22/9/13

In total contrast to most of the week which preceded it, today was a glorious day. Who knows, perhaps the last burst of genuine summer this year. The light made even this neglected, graffiti-tagged fire escape at the back of the gym look sort of romantic.

Car wash

Saturday 21st September 2013, 1.20pm (day 758)

Car wash, 21/9/13Just a random scene passed on the way to somewhere else. Not something I was doing — I don’t own a car. Which means I don’t have to wash it. Or put petrol in it. Or pay tax on it. Et cetera.

I like the mistiness of this shot caused by the high-pressure jet. Also that this guy seems to manage to still look quite cool even in wellington boots.

Heroic plum tree

Friday 20th September 2013, 8.35am (day 757)

Plum tree, 20/9/13

Extraordinary harvest of fruit this year.  I swear we have had 14kg, or around 30lbs, of plums off this one tree in our garden this year. At one point a huge branch broke off it purely because of the weight of the fruit, and the branch you see here is being artificially propped up to ensure it does not share the same fate.

Nice weather for ducks

Thursday 19th September 2013, 10.20am (day 756)

Depressed duck, 19/9/13‘”Nice weather for ducks”, they said. “Come to sunny Yorkshire”, they said. Well, this sucks. And all my friends have buggered off to Spain this morning without me.’

The marquee after the night before

Wednesday 18th September 2013, 10.20am (day 755)

Marquee and balloons, 18/9/13

This marquee sits outside my building at uni, where thousands of people currently wander around looking half-lost and half-excited. Whatever was going on in here yesterday, though, it’s moved on, though no one has yet thought to clear up the balloons.

Manchester Town Hall

Tuesday 17th September 2013, 9.40am (day 754)

Manchester town hall, 17/9/13

In case this hasn’t been apparent from the pictures, it’s been raining for about three days now: not heavily, but persistently. As it always seems to around now, just in time to welcome the new year’s students to Manchester: hi, here’s that grey rainy city you were being warned about. Wanted to get a picture today that encapsulated their arrival, but with such flat grey light it was better, in the end, to do one like this. I know I could have been more at the necessary right angle to the facade, but hey.

The construction site, as babysitter

Monday 16th September 2013, 3.30pm (day 753)

Watching the building, 16/9/13

A bit of a repetition, after my picture of the same crane last Friday (the ‘unexpectedly large object‘), but the building works going on down there are attracting attention from all comers, as shown by today’s shot of a grandfather and grandson (the relationship was obvious when you saw them from the front) getting some quality time in together, watching the action.

Farmers’ market in the rain

Sunday 15th September 2013, 1.00pm (day 752)

Farmers market, 15/9/13

Very few people bothered today, on either side of the tables. Not surprised, though — the weather was dismal.
