Necessary protection

Saturday 6th December 2025, 4.40pm (day 5,217)

Rain at Chadderton, 6/12/25

With five minutes to go in Chadderton v Burscough, the score still 0-0 and a big chunk of the Atlantic Ocean seemingly pouring from above, I am sure I was not the only one wondering why I was still there. At least this person had some protection. I notice the title of the post might also refer to the netting, which I have included mainly because it seems to enhance the rain effect. Did I mention it was raining?

Shelter from the rain

Sunday 20th July 2025, 1.55pm (day 5,078)

Old bridge in rain, 20/7/25

Chose exactly the wrong time this afternoon to pop down to town for a bit of food shopping, particularly as I did so without umbrella or jacket. I may, or may not, have taken this one from inside the White Swan pub…. OK, I did. But it was certainly a preferable option at this point in time.

Wet day in the office

Tuesday 27th May 2025, 11.55am (day 5,024)

Corridor umbrella, 27/5/25

You could say there’s been a change in the weather over the last couple of days. I managed to get to and from campus without getting wet but others were not so fortunate, including Susan in the next-door office, it seems.

Setting up at the Yacht Club

Wednesday 1st May 2024, 4.55pm (day 4,633)

Yacht Club setup, 1/5/24

Believe me, the St Helena Yacht Club is not as posh a place as it sounds. But it is certainly the best place in town to watch the sun set over the Atlantic, and on Wednesday nights there is a regular food night of some description. In early 2023 it was Taco Night — nowadays it has morphed into Fish Night. Either way, I was there early, and the guy with the impressively pointy beard is still setting up.

Easter Monday, day out

Monday 1st April 2024, 3.10pm (day 4,603)

Rain at Brighouse, 1/4/24

This family (I suspect, a boy and his grandparents) were not the only ones wondering what they were doing outside this afternoon — particularly watching Brighouse Town, who slumped to a 1-5 home defeat. For the last 60% of April 2024 I will be somewhere with better (and certainly drier) weather than here — but I’m not there yet.

The vendor rests

Monday 4th December 2023, 4.25pm (day 4,484)

Outside Arndale, 4/12/23

It’s the Season of Tat, it starts some time in mid-October these days so by now I reckon this guy feels like he needs a rest. However he might also be Deliverooing at some point as he has the masked look of the typical cyclopath (I’m tired of dodging them on the streets of Manchester). The definition is low on this shot but that’s because the light’s very dim, even by 4.25pm.

Rockin’ Rupert sings in the rain

Sunday 2nd July 2023, 5.25pm (day 4,329)

Rockin' Rupert, 2/7/23

Where better to end a pleasant weekend than at the Railway’s Sunday afternoon karaoke? Well, OK, perhaps there are several places that are actually better, particularly when Rockin’ Rupert (that’s what he calls himself: it’s written on his hat) turns up, a man for whom the notions of melody, timing and key are just things other people worry about. But he brings props, one of which came out for this rendition of (it seemed to be) Singin’ in the Rain — get it?

Watching the game

Saturday 18th February 2023, 2.30pm (day 4,195)

Football on the park, 18/2/23

After an acutely stressful journey home last night I had no desire to get on a train today, so picked up my usual entertainments as close to home as is possible. The Yorkshire Amateur League game on the park got some passing attention from others, but no one stuck around for very long — as you can doubtless tell, it was a damp experience. Even I gave up after an hour or so and went somewhere warmer and drier (namely, the pub).

A need for umbrellas

Wednesday 16th February 2022, 3.10pm (day 3,828)

Grim day, 16/2/22

Umbra in Latin means ‘shade’, a sign that the umbrella was originally designed to protect against the sun. But this was not the application required in Hebden Bridge this afternoon. I believe this outrage against good weather can officially be termed ‘Storm Dudley’.

Cinema queue, wet

Thursday 28th October 2021, 7.20pm (day 3,717)

Wet cinema queue, 29/10/21

It is wet and cold outside — but warm and more welcoming within the Picture House. The movie? No Time To Die…. alright as these things go, I guess. No spoilers, but surely it’s time to bring this franchise to an end now…. but of course there will always be the next reboot, ‘Young Bond’, ‘Daughter of Bond’, the ‘New 007’.
