Gnomon

Friday 4th September 2020, 4.50pm (day 3,298)

Gnomon, 4/9/20

Gnomon is one of those wonderful strange words use to name mundane things. In this case, the bit of a sundial that casts the shadow.  This particular gnomon sits in the middle of St. George’s Square in Hebden Bridge, and was putting in a brief stint of duty as I took this shot — although this was about the only moment of sunshine in the afternoon. The shop behind — the full name of which you can probably work out — will be either a boutique or a café, as those are the only shops the town really has, these days.

Very limited horizons

Thursday 3rd September 2020, 11.55am (day 3,297)

Working at home, 3/9/20

This really was about as much of the world as I saw today. But, you know, not in black and white.

What happened between 28/4 and 1/5/2016 incidentally? Answer: that year’s Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival. Should you be wondering.

Wednesday 2nd September 2020, 4.15pm (day 3,296)

Post down, 2/9/20

“***!! Goddamn asshole!”

“It’s OK Bob. I’ve got you. Hang in there. Hey fellers! Did anyone get his number plate?”

Chapel Walks, Manchester

Tuesday 1st September 2020, 9.15am (day 3,295)

Chapel walks, 1/9/20

Into September, and Manchester still seems mostly dead.  It’s the cities that seem to have been hit worst by the mass lunacy.  Manchester City Council puts up signs saying “Help Manchester on its road to recovery — by staying 2m apart!” This is doublethink.  The only way that cities will be helped to recover is when people decide for themselves that they are going back to work there.  As I have.

In the company of sunflowers

Monday 31st August 2020, 11.05am (day 3,294)

Sunflowers, 31/8/20

It was a public holiday in the UK — for some. Those that weren’t on holiday included the many people who work in pubs, driving trains or buses, police, nurses etc. And me, who stayed in all day reading funding proposals submitted to the Kazakh government. Well, it’s important to them, at least.

Spending all day sat at the dining table at home would not have given many photo opportunities except that next to me were these sunflowers in a vase. They help August 2020 go out with some vivid colours.

What the garden gave

Sunday 30th August 2020, 12.35pm (day 3,293)

Garden produce, 30/8/20

Apples, rhubarb, blackberries, a leek (the leeks have done magnificently this year), kale, lettuce and I think there’s a blueberry in there somewhere.  Not bad for half an hour up at the allotment. And, you know, a few months of work, mostly by Nature.

Pre-match warm-up

Saturday 29th August 2020, 2.40pm (day 3,292)

Steeton FC, 29/8/20

Travelling abroad may be curtailed at the moment but there’s still plenty of my own country I haven’t seen and going to football matches on Saturday afternoons is, as far as I am concerned, as good a way to see it as any. The village of Steeton, near Keighley, provides a picturesque backdrop to the warm-up exercises of the visiting Avro FC. I like the contrasting colours and the impressive house that pops up above the trees at the top.

Necessary wear

Friday 28th August 2020, 3.35pm (day 3,291)

Wellingtons, 28/8/20

A foul day of almost constant rain, on which even the ducks were taking shelter, unconducive to any great inspiration. The only saving grace was that it was a Friday, and the forecast is better for the weekend to come.

On air

Thursday 27th August 2020, 2.20pm (day 3,290)

On air, 27/8/20

Ssshhhh…. I’m recording. It was an excuse to get onto campus, anyway.  This is only the fifth Manchester picture since the 10th March, 170 days ago.

Birthday sign

Wednesday 26th August 2020, 7.15pm (day 3,289)

Chimney sunset, 26/8/20

“But how shall I know the day of my birth in future years, O Holy Seer of Signs?”

“Drew, stand beside the river and look for the day on which the sun sets between the two pillars. Thus shall you know it.”

I’m 51 today.  This is now the tenth year of the blog.  And life goes on, one day at a time.
