Order now for Christmas

Wednesday 14th December 2022, 5.00pm (day 4,129)

Butchers', 14/12/22

At least I live in a town that still sustains not just one, but two proper butchers’ shops. These guys must make their entire annual profit at this time of year; I know in advance what it will be like when I go to collect my bird two days before Christmas. (Never a turkey, which is a meat I have never found all that appealing, to be honest.) There is no advertising intention to this blog, so can I also point out that despite depicting one of the establishments here, I actually ordered my meat from the other shop.

Umbilicus (not funeral-related)

Monday 19th September 2022, 10.00am (day 4,043)

Mac adaptor, 19/9/22

This is nothing whatsoever to do with today’s global media event, which I could not have spared the time to watch even if the desire had been there: declaring a national holiday at short notice is all well and good but it didn’t mean the jobs went away. Not least the new Mac, that is still in the process of being shaped to look as much like the old one as possible. Though no thanks to Apple, for taking away most of the useful ports on anything they shipped after about 2017. That’s another £64 to the Cupertino coffers for the umbilicus one now needs even to look at all that data sitting on the backup drive.

95% recycled?

Monday 13th June 2022, 12.20pm (day 3,945)

95% recycled, 13/6/22

After the expanded horizons of yesterday, it was back to work today. I could have posted a pic demonstrating that I am a Pinball Wizard (all-time high score on the pub machine) but that would just have been me showing off, so let’s try to make out that I was engaged in some gainful employment. Whether the message on the pen is a metaphor or not, that’s up to you to determine.

Tools of a Zoombie

Wednesday 16th March 2022, 4.30pm (day 3,856)

Work tools, 16/3/22

Eight and a half hours’ work today — almost all spent in online meetings. Even in the depths of lockdown I did not do such a day. These objects marked the limits of my real world. (Yes, that’s a sticker of Graham Chapman’s face stuck to the Macbook.)

Data analysis

Monday 28th February 2022, 1.55pm (day 3,840)

Highlighter pens, 28/2/22

Data analysis done the retro way, on the train. Who needs expensive software packages when you have highlighter pens of differing colours. And months after the fact, too — these are interview transcripts from St Helena. But hey, I got to them in the end.

Work lag

Monday 18th October 2021, 5.10pm (day 3,707)

Working at home, 18/10/21

No point claiming that I did anything other than this kind of thing today — and there were almost another three hours of it to go after I took this shot. Jet lag, I seem to have avoided. Work lag, I have.

Marking and more marking (not even halfway)

Wednesday 10th February 2021, 11.40am (day 3,457)

Marking, 10/2/21

This has been my life for days, and will be for some time to come. This is not even a Covid thing; this endless increase in my workload is presented as something inevitable, a sign of success even. Four years ago there was a third of this number.

After a day working at home

Friday 11th September 2020, 4.00pm (day 3,305)

Slogan, 11/9/20

Not my sticker. But I’m in agreement. I used to think my employer could be counted among the good guys, but recently they have used Covid as an excuse to strip us of a quarter of our team — and then told us, oh look, you will have more students in the coming year than ever.  If I seem disinterested in my ‘career’ these days, there are reasons for that.

Very limited horizons

Thursday 3rd September 2020, 11.55am (day 3,297)

Working at home, 3/9/20

This really was about as much of the world as I saw today. But, you know, not in black and white.

What happened between 28/4 and 1/5/2016 incidentally? Answer: that year’s Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival. Should you be wondering.

Notes on someone else’s work

Friday 10th January 2020, 1.10pm (day 3,060)

Thesis annotations, 10/1/20

Friday was one of those highly exciting days spent entirely working at home (or, I admit, in the pub after), and with little light outside. I have this thesis to examine in a couple of weeks so finished reading it today — it having been lugged aroud the Lakes on Wednesday too. What’s my opinion on it? Well, that’s not for this forum. But at least the task will get me to Belfast in a fortnight, and provide more diverse material for this blog.
