Live in Bangladesh

Wednesday 6th May 2026, 10.35am (day 5,368)

UNESCO online, 6/5/26

Actually there were participants from a few different countries here today but the core was Bangladeshi. I’ve finished my part of the webinar — that’s my icon on the right of the set (a picture that is nearly nine years old now, as in it I’m wearing my eclipse glasses). My colleague Martyn is about to get going in my stead, and who doesn’t love a Dr Strangelove reference?

Still in bed (reading)

Tuesday 9th December 2025, 10.55am (day 5,220)

Still in bed, 9/12/25

A senior professorial colleague once said: “you’re a Reader. Do some fucking reading.” He was right. And there’s no reason why I need to prematurely leap out of bed to do it.

Working, but not inside

Thursday 1st August 2024, 2.20pm (day 4,725)

Macbook outside, 1/8/24

Steve, in virtual life

Monday 21st February 2022, 11.25am (day 3,833)

KF and Steve, 21/2/22

Before 2020 I never minded doing online teaching, because it offered variety, and was not the only game in town. But there are limits, and I probably reached mine about this time last year. Fortunately, a sense of Real Normal has largely returned. This particular class was always designed to be an online session — when it works, use it, when not, get face-to-face. Steve, one of my PhD students, peeks his face out from his virtual cell.

Very limited horizons

Thursday 3rd September 2020, 11.55am (day 3,297)

Working at home, 3/9/20

This really was about as much of the world as I saw today. But, you know, not in black and white.

What happened between 28/4 and 1/5/2016 incidentally? Answer: that year’s Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival. Should you be wondering.

MacBook (there went my day)

Monday 13th March 2017, 6.25pm (day 2,027)

MacBook, 13/3/17

With all due respect to its intellectual and conversational benefits, a day teaching at home online is not going to be the most exciting day photographically. Never mind. In a week’s time I shall be on my way to Japan.
