On the city walls, Chester

Monday 28th August 2023, 12.35pm (day 4,386)

Eastgate clock, 28/8/23

The city of Chester has one of two remaining complete sets of city walls in the UK (the other is Derry). Sitting out and trying to have a quiet lunchtime beer under the famous Eastgate clock was not a plan I entertained for more than a few minutes, but at least I got a photo — which turned out much better in black and white. The first portrait orientation for a long while, too: almost all of the shots on here are now landscape, but this is an exception.

Behind the pub, late

Sunday 27th August 2023, 10.05pm (day 4,385)

Behind Railway, late, 27/8/23

Gosh, this year of my life starts with two consecutive nights out. But then again it is a holiday weekend. We are the last ones out behind the Railway, in fact. This picture appeals purely because of the lights.

Johnny Marr does “How Soon is Now?”

Saturday 26th August 2023, 8.25pm (day 4,384)

Johnny Marr, 26/8/23

My 54th birthday. The title of this blog is now 12 years out of date, but never mind. A chance to celebrate this anniversary at the Piece Hall, Halifax, where The Charlatans were doing their own latest ‘Not Quite Dead Yet Tour’ (Tim Burgess is 56: we’ve both still got a couple of decades on Roger Daltrey, admittedly).

But they’ve been on here before, so let’s feature instead the Unexpectedly Decent Support Act, Johnny Marr — who dutifully did deign to perform the one and only Smiths song I really do give a toss about. Altogether now: “There’s a club if you’d like to go…. you might meet somebody who really loves you. So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry and you want to die.” Ah: How Soon Is Now? It does take me back.

View from Pecket Well

Friday 25th August 2023, 12.25pm (day 4,383)

View from Pecket Well, 25/8/23

Today marks the end of the 12th full year that I have been doing this blog. In that time I have engaged in plenty of travelling, though there’s been less of that in recent years, for various reasons. But the attractions of my local area are still just about enough to sustain the interest. For now, I’m carrying on…. year 13 starts tomorrow.

The roofers: still there

Thursday 24th August 2023, 8.45am (day 4,382)

Nutclough Mill roofers, 24/8/23

For some weeks now these guys have been pretty much the first thing seen as our curtains are opened in the morning; work to redo the roof of the Nutclough Mill has been going on forever, it seems. Rain or shine, and it was definitely rain this morning.

Water leak

Wednesday 23rd August 2023, 6.30pm (day 4,381)

Water leak, 23/8/23

Across from our house, out of the road, cometh water: not necessarily a commodity in short supply in West Yorkshire but still, those of us who pay our bills do sometimes wonder what proportion of them goes to cover this kind of unnecessary wastage. The blue paint on the road and on the inspection cover above suggests the utilities company are ‘aware’: but that doesn’t mean anything in practical terms. Not the most exciting of shots, I know, but you could always see it as an abstract.

Bolton Lads & Girls Club

Tuesday 22nd August 2023, 8.55pm (day 4,380)

Bolton LGC, 22/8/23

This is the kind of photo that only really works if I’ve got the pitch truly horizontal; I think I have. There wasn’t much else to this venue apart from this view taken as I was leaving, but it sums it up reasonably well.

The larder at bridge no. 17

Monday 21st August 2023, 11.10am (day 4,379)

Spider larder, 21/8/23

A healthily-stocked larder, at least, if you are a spider. It’s like our plums — you keep them for later. Bridge no. 17 is the one at Black Pit Lock on the Rochdale Canal, in Hebden Bridge town centre.

Yellow, and stripes

Flowers and market, 20/8/23

I did follow England’s efforts in this morning’s World Cup Final, but I didn’t go watch it anywhere organised, I don’t like watching football on the TV whomever is playing. But they lost, so in lieu of pictures of any celebrations, here is an indication that August might finally be giving summer a go. I don’t know what these flowers are, sorry, but there are plenty of them blooming down by the market at the moment.

Anarchy

Saturday 19th August 2023, 12.50pm (day 4,377)

No parking, 19/8/23

It was still there when I passed it again in the early evening, too. Shocking, what is the world coming to, etc etc.
