Treu Ginnel

Tuesday 30th December 2014, 11.35am (day 1,223)

Treu Ginnel, 30/12/14

The name of this street in Lancaster may make no sense but perhaps it helps to know that a ‘ginnel’, in these parts, means an alleyway. Where the ‘Treu’ comes from I do not know, and why this guy was taking a photo of the sign I have no idea, but seeing as I was taking a photo of him, perhaps he took the photo in order to give material for someone else to take another photo, in a kind of recursive thing.

Alessandra, at work

Thursday 10th July 2014, 3.30pm (day 1,050)

Alessandra at work, 10/7/14

Another nice reason to come to Nairobi is the presence of some of my distance learning students, including Alessandra, pictured here on the right, doing her stuff for her company, the Cultural Video Foundation — check out their web site, they do some amazing stuff. Here she is interviewing a local artist for another project. And yes, that is an old double-decker London bus in the background.

Photographing the old bridge

Saturday 18th January 2014, 3.55pm (day 877)

Photographing bridge, 18/1/14

I know this is rather over-exposed and otherwise suspect technically and in terms of composition (you can’t see the bridge properly) — but I still think it’s OK. Taken on Old Gate, Hebden Bridge, this afternoon.

The wedding photograph

Saturday 24th August 2013, 4.00pm (day 730)

Wedding photography, 24/8/13

Congratulations to Caroline — I’m sure you don’t need to ask which of these people she is — and Loyd, on the right, married today at St Mary’s church in Yarm, with this photo taken later at Priory Cottages, Wetherby, the venue for the reception. And a very good time was had by all.

Photo shoot, the Botanical Gardens

Sunday 12th May 2013, 4.00pm (day 626)

Kids photo session, 12/5/13

At first when I walked past this little vignette I thought the little boy was holding a big doll — which considering I had The Who’s I’m a Boy on the iPod at the time (a song about forced transvestism) I thought was rather ironic. However, then I saw it was his little sister. Cute…

There have been quite a few photos of the Botanical Gardens during my time in Brisbane, but there won’t be many more — two more full days in Brisbane to come after today, then I’m off.

Getting a close-up

Thursday 14th March 2013, 12.20pm (day 567)

Lady and lizards, 14/3/13

Lunchtime in the Botanical Gardens, Brisbane, and this lady snaps a close-up of two squabbling water dragons while a third tries to sneak round the back without being noticed.

The official (Russian) photographer

Monday 25th June 2012, 11.40am (day 305)

Photographer, 25/6/12

God, it feels so long since I have been doing this blog. Way back in September – though it feels much longer ago – I took a picture of ‘the official photographer’, on a day when he was taking photos of us, constantly, throughout a conference/seminar session. Today I got the chance to repeat the theme, quite exactly.

She is definitely cuter. And considerably more Russian. Whether she is a better photographer or not, I have no proof.

Joe tries out his Christmas present

Sunday 25th December 2011, 12.15pm (day 122)

Joe the photographer, 25/12/11

Hard to know quite how to encapsulate a day like Christmas without cliché. But here is Joe using one of his Christmas presents…. a chip off the old block? Who knows?

The game, by the way, is mölkky, a version of skittles for which I developed a liking in Finland last midsummer. Very tactical. Worth a try, if you have a piece of flat land about half the size of a tennis court to play it on.

Also, today is the end of the 4th month of this blog. I feel like I have been doing it forever. Actually I have twice as much left as I have already done.

And a happy Christmas to you all….

The Official Photographer, Simon Building, University of Manchester

Wednesday 7th September 2011, 1.10pm (day 13)

Official photographer, 7/9/11

At this meeting I attended today this guy was taking photographs of everyone, as soon as they opened their mouths. He was a nice guy, though. At the lunch break I said, ‘You’ve been taking photos of everyone, now I’m going to take your photo, and put it on my web site.’ And so, I did.
