Back home

Friday 1st September 2017, 8.20am (day 2,199)

Pennines from above, 1/9/17

It’s nice to travel — even if it’s for work — but it’s just as nice to come home. I don’t know where this is exactly, somewhere in Derbyshire I’m guessing. Pennines, for sure. And in the middle of a valley like this, I live, so it’s representative enough, welcome home.

The forgotten footbridge, Manchester Victoria

Thursday 17th August 2017, 8.50am (day 2,184)

Unused footbridge, 17/8/17

Whatever has happened down the years to the configuration of Manchester Victoria station, this footbridge is definitely less used than it must once have been. The only time it’s really worth using it is if you’re sat at the back of the 8:05 from Hebden Bridge, which stops on platform 6 and the principal footbridge gets clogged up with the contents of the full train, this one is slightly nearer. But hey, it’s got an interesting view.

New Market, 2017

Monday 14th August 2017, 9.00am (day 2,181)

New Market, 2017, 14/8/17

Finally, a street in Manchester which seems to have rid itself of its building works. New Market has had its transformation sporadically documented on here: this was it before the building, this one during, and now above. Was it worth all the bother? The premises on the right have become a hotel in the mean time: but I wouldn’t say much else has happened.

….as usual

Thursday 10th August 2017, 9.20am (day 2,177)

As usual, 10/8/17

The Arndale Centre, like most of the rest of Manchester city centre, is in a state of renovation; but Next is Open As Usual, so those of us passing can be reassured that living that lifestyle is still possible.

Estates and facilities

Tuesday 8th August 2017, 9.55am (day 2,175)

Workmen at University, 8/8/17

Definitely the most important Directorate of the University at this point in time. It is almost impossible to take a photograph anywhere in Manchester city centre without hitting some kind of building site at the moment (as I have observed numerous times recently); the University is certainly doing its bit for this architectural movement of 2017.

Manchester (temporarily)

Friday 4th August 2017, 11.55am (day 2,171)

Manchester from Urbis, 4/8/17

I’m still on holiday, so I’m not here. You haven’t seen me. (Taken from inside the Urbis/National Football Museum building, though you can’t prove that.)

Waiting for the graduation ceremony

Thursday 20th July 2017, 12.15pm (day 2,156)

Waiting for graduation, 20/7/17

The twice-yearly graduation ceremonies give us the chance to dress up in our finery and enjoy some pomp and circumstance. Opportunities to do that are getting fewer in the world so let’s embrace them while they still exist. And as ever, congratulations to all the students as well.

Graduation balloons

Thursday 13th July 2017, 9.00am (day 2,149)

Graduation balloons, 13/7/17

It’s that time of year again. It crossed my mind today that it’s now twenty years since I first graduated, in July 1997. Gosh…

Building site #4

Wednesday 12th July 2017, 9.30am (day 2,148)

Building site no. 4, 12/7/17

I did a survey today and established there are presently ten building sites somehow or other getting in the way of my walk from Manchester Victoria to my office, as follows:

1) right outside the station; 2) the northern corner of the Arndale Centre is being redone; 3) on the corner of Chapel Walks and Cheapside 4) the corner of Mosley Street and Nicholas Street (the one pictured); 5) the building opposite the Chinese Arch that burned down last year; 6) big development blocking Abingdon Street at Major Street 7) the old BBC site, which has spread out to block the cycle path under the Mancunian Way at Brook Street; 8) the Engineering Campus Development at university; 9) the Brunswick Street ‘landscaping’ at same; 10) the Students’ Union redevelopment at same.

Manchester!! give this creative destruction a rest please!

Friday morning, Exchange Square

Friday 7th July 2017, 9.10am (day 2,143)

Exchange Square, 7/7/17

It is approaching 12 years since I started work in Manchester. In that time I have only rarely been in the city every day of a five day working week (indicated by the fact that there has only been one five-day run of Manchester pictures on here, which happened to be in March 2014). I have managed four this week, however. Anyway — the city might not be photographed as often as it could be, but this shot marks a nice round number — the 400th Manchester picture to appear on here.

Incidentally the blue plaque to the top left marks the founding of the Northern Rugby Football Union, later the Rugby League, in a hotel that once stood at this spot.
