Temporary shelter

Wednesday 5th December 2018, 9.20am (day 2,659)

Mancunian Way, 5/12/18

The last couple of days have been sunnier but today was as gloomy and grey a day as it is possible to envision south of the Arctic Circle. Wet, too. My two-mile walk to work in Manchester was done in a constant drizzle. Like me, the guy on the right here stood under the Mancunian Way overpass for a few minutes to take a break from it all. How low the light was here can be judged by the blur on the second figure, left of centre, who was just walking at ordinary speed as I pressed the shutter.

Manchester, City of Gold

Monday 3rd December 2018, 3.30pm (day 2,657)

City of Gold, 3/12/18

At least the sun came out this afternoon, its last rays of the day illuminating the skyscrapers that have grown up recently in the Deansgate area of the city. Old timers would not recognise some parts of Manchester now the years-long construction boom is starting to top out.

Humanities Building, Bridgeford Street

Thursday 29th November 2018, 1.45pm (day 2,653)

Hums Bridgeford St., 29/11/18

On the outside, not one of the campus’s more attractive buildings, but it was looking OK this afternoon, and inside it’s actually quite pleasant, with lots of dark wood panelling etc. Mind you I still get lost in this building sometimes as it has a very confusing room layout, despite (or perhaps because of) hosting the schools of Planning and Architecture.

Winter is coming

Tuesday 27th November 2018, 9.35am (day 2,651)

Campus morning, 27/11/18

This burst of wan and vapid sunlight is about as much as we got today. Not long after this, foul grey rain set in and did not let up all day. Winter is coming… we are in the late November doldrums of the year and as usual, I just hope to get to the end of the semester (mid-December) without any major grief.

Early morning, Manchester

Wednesday 21st November 2018, 7.20am (day 2,645)

Royal Exchange arcade, 21/11/18

It’s becoming harder to crank myself up in the mornings to get the 06:32 — best train it might be, when I need to pull an early start at work, but it’s now still dark even when it deposits me in Manchester city centre, a state of affairs which will last until into February. Some places have the lights on at that time, but by no means all. This should be the last of a run of a couple of months spent only in England, but I’m off somewhere else for a few days tomorrow.

Pre-lecture cup of tea

Friday 9th November 2018, 9.35am (day 2,633)

Bridgeford St. cafe, 9/11/18

Fridays are my teaching days at the moment, not every week (hence my ability to bugger off to the Lakes last Friday) but most of them. And it’s an all day thing. So visual variety is not a characteristic of my average Friday, my apologies. Things kick of at 10: the pre-lecture cup of tea from the cafe in the Bridgeford Street building is an essential preliminary.

Altrincham Street extension

Tuesday 6th November 2018, 1.25pm (day 2,630)

Altrincham Street, 6/11/18

Altrincham Street marks one of the edges of the Manchester campus. Officially, it ends just behind where this shot was taken: here, we are looking through a gate that blocks off this extension, squeezing itself through the gap between the car park and the (overcrowded and inadequate) cross-Manchester railway line on the right. Why this shot, and the second monochrome shot in a row? I just like the perspectives. And it’s a kind of non-space, forgotten, unused. In some cities there’d be a whole thriving community down here.

Vista down Whitworth Street

Tuesday 30th October 2018, 3.55pm (day 2,623)

Whitworth Street, 30/10/18

I don’t make a point of mentioning it on here but my surname is Whitworth and Whitworth Street in Manchester is a significant thoroughfare that I am obliged to cross each time I walk to and from work. It’s about time I tried for a decent photo of it. Taken while crossing the road — I do try always to cross this street carefully, it would just be too embarrassing to be run over on an eponym.

3.55pm and there’s a sunset cast to the sky…. It’s getting later earlier. If you see what I mean.

Smoking spot

Wednesday 24th October 2018, 2.05pm (day 2,617)

Pall Mall Square, 24/10/18

I’m sure even non-smokers appreciate the notion of the smoking spot. There’s almost always someone sitting on this bench in Pall Mall Square, Manchester, whenever I walk past and I’ve been eyeing it up as a portrait for a while but seeing as it’s the kind of shot which would only work if I was facing straight on to the subject, then the risk of being busted is rather high. However I got away with it today. And it’s another quite good wall, isn’t it… not uniform at all.

“Move along, nothing to see here”…

Monday 22nd October 2018, 4.55pm (day 2,615)

Purple alien, 22/10/18

…so the guy second left seems to be saying. Why this tableau stands near platform 14 of Piccadilly station in Manchester at the moment I have no idea. Perhaps just for the photo opportunities.
