Kestrel, New Year’s Eve

Friday 31st December 2021, 2.10pm (day 3,781)

Kestrel, 31/12/21

Out on a walk on the hillside above our house, and my father-in-law Dave acted as the ‘spotter’ for this one, pointing out the kestrel that was hovering above the grassland, hunting for mice or sparrows. Obviously wanting its profile done, it then landed and obligingly waited on this lamp-post for a minute, so I could get the shot (that’s the old, ruined Heptonstall church behind).

A Happy New Year to you all. I mention no politics here; I will merely say that had the shot of another bird-of-prey, the hawk on 5th March, been just that little bit better in focus, that would have been my favourite shot of 2021. However, instead I will give it to the minutes-old lamb captured on April 11th.

Evening on Napoleon Street

Tuesday 30th November 2021, 6.30pm (day 3,750)

On Napoleon Street, 30/11/21

I seem to have made it to the last day in St Helena without a Napoleon reference — so here’s one, a vague one anyway. Not that this shot has anything to do with the man himself, for whom, having heard the stories of his time here, I now feel a little sorry. Anyway: there will be more to come of this place. But it’s time to head home.

After a day working at home

Friday 11th September 2020, 4.00pm (day 3,305)

Slogan, 11/9/20

Not my sticker. But I’m in agreement. I used to think my employer could be counted among the good guys, but recently they have used Covid as an excuse to strip us of a quarter of our team — and then told us, oh look, you will have more students in the coming year than ever.  If I seem disinterested in my ‘career’ these days, there are reasons for that.

Finished building project

Wednesday 21st August 2019, 12.10pm (day 2,918)

Royce building, 21/8/19

I have tried to cut out pictures of building sites in Manchester to avoid sheer overload, but hey, here’s a rarity — a recently finished building project. Until about 18 months ago the new Henry Royce Building was just a grassy patch, but now it is there in all its bland majesty. Although I don’t think it’s yet finished inside.

Two shots in a row from Manchester… a sign it will start to creep back into my life on a more regular basis as the new year approaches. I’m not really going anywhere for three months now.

Kilburn Building in the sun

Wednesday 16th January 2019, 3.10pm (day 2,701)

Kilburn building, 16/1/19
One of those days on which I got soaked in foul winter rain on the walk to campus from the station, and dreaded doing it again on the way back — but fortunately, the sun came out. Here, for once I don’t mind the lamppost in the shot.

I really hope there won’t be too many Manchester pictures over the next few months — at least that will be an indication that my sabbatical will be something meaningful. But it doesn’t start yet: I will be there most of next week before I can escape for a while.

Joe, hiding

Thursday 24th November 2011, 8.45am (day 91)

Joe behind lamppost, 24/11/11

I know this pic is out-of-focus but it gave me the biggest laugh of the day, which is enough reason to put it on here. Joe is really hiding here, this is not just a random shot that happened to catch him in this position. Fellow fans of Arrested Development may share my humor if I cite the line – “you can always tell a Milford man”. But then again, they may not.
