The back door of the Railway Inn, Hebden Bridge

Wednesday 19th October 2011, 4.20pm (day 55)

Railway back door, 19/10/11

A day swamped with bad vibes but by the end I had found out the probable cause. Not a pleasant thing at all but not something which affected me directly. At that point I was glad I was able to join friends down at the pub.

I must have come through this back door at least twice a week on average for the last ten years but it’s nice to see it with a fresh eye now and again.

Outside the ‘Inn on the Bridge’, Hebden Bridge

Tuesday 18th October 2011, 8.55am (day 54)

Skip in sunlight, 18/10/11

The light was weird this morning – a burst of sunshine into a day that was otherwise pretty foul – so here’s a challenge: can it make even an industrial skip, full of waste, look photogenic?

Hell yeah. It can.

Our neighbour and his motorcycle

Saturday 15th October 2011, 2.25pm (day 51)

Richard and bike, 15/10/11

I’ve lived in this house for over 10 years now and all that time the house across the road has been inhabited by this gentleman. And every Saturday morning he is out there working on his bike and listening to his ’60s music. And then on Sunday morning we are usually roused briefly from sleep at around 7am as it farts into life across the road and he heads off for whatever rally or off-road session he is visiting that weekend. He seems pretty happy. I’m ashamed to say I don’t know his name.

Postscript: It’s Richard.

Sunset seen from home

Thursday 13th October 2011, 6.30pm (day 49)

Sunset from home, 13/10/11_low-res

Today was proving a very mundane day photographically and I was struggling to find a representative picture – until the natural environment obliged with the last light of the day.

Tomorrow is the 50th day of this blog, by the way. So look out for the page of ‘outtakes’ (or ‘best of the rest’) which I’m going to stick up tomorrow alongside the daily picture.

Calder Holmes Park, Hebden Bridge

Wednesday 12th October 2011, 8.45am (day 48)

Rain in Calder Holmes Park, 12/10/11

The Indian Summer buggered off back to India at least a week ago and since then it’s barely stopped raining. Not much else worth adding here, except perhaps, ‘enough already’.

Joe at the dentist

Tuesday 11th October 2011, 4.20pm (day 47)

Joe at dentist, 11/10/11

This looks like major surgery, except it’s the most routine check-up. Which is, I guess, why I like this picture – professional competence emerging in the every day. If it wasn’t there, we might not notice for quite a while…. but eventually, we would.

Leprechaun Village, Nutclough Woods

Sunday 2nd October 2011, 4.40pm (day 38)

Leprechaun village, 2/10/11

Growing out of a tree trunk, in the woods over the road, spotted while walking off a big roast dinner. Well, OK, it’s probably not a real leprechaun village, but who knows for sure.

Mind you, come to think of it, I don’t live in Ireland.

Rochdale Canal, Hebden Bridge

Saturday 1st October 2011, 10.20am (day 37)

Rochdale Canal, 1/10/11

I like travelling; but I also like coming home. It’s a cliché, but one that is true, particularly on a beautiful, Indian summer’s day like today.

I had another very close candidate for today’s photo, on a similar theme, which I have put on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/drew_whitworth/6200384161/in/photostream. Like everyone else, I think Indian summers are great – that last little bit of heat and sun before the inevitability of winter. No wonder we all chill out.

Watching Brighton v Leeds in the Railway

Friday 23rd September 2011, 8.40pm (day 29)

Lds watching football, 23/9/11_low-res

God, it’s been a busy week. Even something like the Hippodrome seems a month ago. Came back from work late and knackered but instead of doing the sensible thing and going straight home I went and watched my lot on TV for the second time in 48 hours – my lot being Brighton, and as I live in West Yorkshire, I did so in a pub full of Leeds fans. At least they know me. 2-0 down after 25 minutes, we went 3-2 up with five minutes to go: buggers still equalised though didn’t they. Final score 3-3. I need to sleep.

Pigeons, Hebden Bridge

Wednesday 21st September 2011, 8.45am (day 27)

Pigeons, 21/9/11

Some pictures you just take by chance. This was supposed to be a picture of some workmen, and they’re still there in the invisible three-quarters of this significantly cropped image, but as I took it, this flock of pigeons flew across. It’s not a bad shot, though the birds are quite blurred and that branch that goes across the lower centre of the picture unbalances it a bit. But though I took some other nice pix on what was a pleasant morning here, with all the others, I could probably take them again. A shot like this may only happen once, so I’m nominating it for today.
