Tea break

Tuesday 16th February 2016, 9.40am (day 1,636)

Llangollen cafe, 16/2/16

Broke the drive back from Aberystwyth at this cafe in Llangollen, north-east Wales. Clare and Joe ponder the meaning of the universe or possibly just a very good few days.

Crossing the road

Friday 12th February 2016, 9.30am (day 1,632)

Crossing, 12/2/16

Sometimes you don’t even realise you’ve got the shot until it’s been sitting on your camera all day then you upload it. This was just a general scene but once I saw how glorious her hair was she became its obvious subject. Had to crop it down a lot, hence its loss of sharpness and increased grain — but that’s then helped by going monochrome.

Old door

Saturday 19th December 2015, 4.20pm (day 1,577)

Peeling door, 19/12/15

Second of five days in a row where I guarantee I am not going beyond the home — pub — shop axis. Time to dig into some creative corners; I’ve had my eye on this door for a while.

On the escalator

Friday 11th December 2015, 12.05pm (day 1,569)

Escalator, 11/12/15

Specifically, the one connecting the vast conference space at the Celtic Manor with the equally vast lobby and vast spread of guest rooms. Did I mention it was a vast place?

I over-exposed this one when I took it, but then I just ran with it, there are some nice shapes and lines here. I like the way his legs have almost disappeared.

Oxford Road

Tuesday 10th November 2015, 9.50am (day 1,538)

Oxford Road, 10/11/15

This is not my only walking route from Victoria to the office, but I head up and down it frequently enough. We are heading into that time of year where at the time I typically walk down it, the sunlight will be coming from straight ahead — not always easy to capture well but when it works, it’s great light. Today, the clouds helped; but there was still some flare, which led to spots of odd colour, hence the monochrome.

The building on the far left, by the way, is the Manchester Aquatics Centre, venue for the swimming and diving events of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Grocer’s stall, Oxford Road

Tuesday 3rd November 2015, 4.20pm (day 1,531)

Veg stall, 3/11/15

This stall is a familiar sight on the walk back up Oxford Road into the city centre: it’s there in the same spot every weekday, and maybe weekends too. I like this shot because it’s the one I meant to take, only it’s gone monochrome to obscure the fact that the square behind the woman’s head was a totally incongruous bright purple on the initial version. It still looks a bit conspicuous here but overall the effect is much better in black and white.

Guitar in pub, Sunday evening

Sunday 25th October 2015, 8.50pm (day 1,522)

Guitar, 25/10/15

Took Clare out tonight as it is her birthday tomorrow. Proof I am not normally the dirty-stop-out type comes by noting this is the latest shot in any given day for three months, since 24th July. But the clocks went back last night, it was dark by 5pm so I have to get used to shooting in low light again.

Beneath the cloud

Sunday 18th October 2015, 11.05am (day 1,515)

Beneath mushroom cloud, 18/10/15

Sometimes the shots just have that extra little thing about them that you didn’t even realise was there when you took it. I’ve travelled today, to a place that I’ve not been to before and which you’ll see over the next few days, rest assured, but this shot was taken en route. These clouds are not natural, they are being pumped out of some power station or other, maybe in France or northern Germany, I’m not completely sure. I loved the way they flattened out at the top in some cold layer. But it was only when I uploaded this one that I spotted the plane…

Water race, Nutclough Woods

Saturday 3rd October 2015, 2.25pm (day 1,500)

Water race, 3/10/15

Welcome to day 1,500 of the blog, One and a half thousand days turns out to be 4 years, 1 month and 8 days in old money. The path through Nutclough Woods was closed for ages as the flood defenses at the bottom were rebuilt (three years after they were needed); but it is now open again, so let’s use this milestone date to celebrate that fact. The weather has turned autumnal, but the trees remain in summer green for now.

Turbines

Sunday 27th September 2015, 11.30am (day 1,494)

Turbines and clouds, 27/9/15

Mist in Yorkshire this morning, clear skies in Lancashire, with this photo taken almost right on the border between the two, up on the Long Causeway, above Todmorden. I know I did wind turbines 12 days ago, but it’s impossible to resist returning to the theme.
