In the 15 years and 2 months that this blog has been running, the Hebden Bridge Picture House has appeared plenty of times. It’s therefore not hard to deduce that Clare and I both spend a decent amount of time here, her particularly, and so it seemed more than appropriate to hire the place out for today’s occasion — that being, her birthday, and not just any birthday, but one of those with a zero at the end of it. The movie was High Fidelity. The celebrations, enjoyable, and always good to share them with friends and family. For once I am breaking the rule that photos on here are unstaged. Happy birthday!

On went the weekend. The only bad thing about weekends at the moment is that they only last two days. The weather wasn’t great, though it was hardly a natural disaster, despite the hysteria which now accompanies any period of low pressure that the Met Office decide is worthy of a name. I can still go walking in the woods, right guys? Is that OK?

Reasonably typical behaviour for a Saturday, if I’m being honest. In any case, the West Riding Refreshment Rooms at Dewsbury station is the kind of pub worth specifically travelling to: or just drop in, if changing trains. The watcher on the window sill reminds us that it’s late October.

“Controlled demolition”

Kenyon Hall scaffolding, 23/10/26

Any former students of the University of Manchester who may feel nostalgic for their digs in George Kenyon Hall of residence, wave it goodbye, because apparently it’s never emerging from beneath the scaffolding that has swathed it for some weeks now. Underneath, the building is apparently undergoing ‘controlled demolition’. Meanwhile, somewhere to the left, a big new hall of residence or two is being erected. It gives people something to do, I suppose. The shot is an abstract collage: this was about the day’s only burst of anything resembling sunlight.

Found?

Found box, 22/10/26

A rash of these has recently appeared on platforms 4 and 5 of Manchester Victoria. What do they indicate? Buried treasure perhaps? One can do all sorts of things with metal detectors these days, microwaves, etc. Or maybe a water diviner has been on the case with a sprig of hazel. Either way it seems brave to announce the discovery to the public in advance, as it were.

He’s not doing much, just posing. But I got the focus right, which is by no means always the case, and so I hope he’s happy with the portrait, not that he’ll ever see it. (Unless these birds have an internet life about which we are ignorant.)

Dismal and dark

This shot captures the drizzle but it doesn’t capture quite how dim and dismal it was at 10.25 this morning in Manchester. A thoroughly depressing day, and the clocks haven’t even gone back yet. Was work itself any better? Mmm, well, bits of it, I suppose. Mainly the bits done online, when I was somewhere else, at least in spirit.

Bounding out of bed the second the alarm goes off is not something that either of us particularly do any more: if it happens, it’s only to make the cups of tea and then return to bed for a while, usually with some puzzle or other to pass the time. Mental activity, yes, but physical jerks in the morning, that’s just for other people now. I like this shot because the twin sources of light — lamp and phone — make C’s hand look rather spooky.

I admit there are times when my fantasies of both downsizing and drifting lead, perhaps even logically, to thoughts of spending the rest of my days on one of these. But I’d miss the bathroom too much. Oh yeah, and central heating. Nevertheless, these thoughts do come, particularly on pleasant Sunday mornings before it has got too cold.

In its favoured spot

Dog at Dearne, 17/10/26

I’ve never been to the ground of Dearne and District FC before but something tells me that this dog spends pretty much every home match in this position: he certainly did today. We all have to stand on the outer side of the fence, but this chap is clearly much more important than us. At least, in his head.
