Before the ‘Race for Life’, Halifax

Sunday 21st July 2013, 9.25am (day 696)

Race for Life, 21/7/13

Clare was one of approximately 1,600 women running this race today, the majority in the regulation pink, raising money to fight all kinds of cancer. I don’t normally do advertising on the blog but this time I feel obliged to mention that you can sponsor her (and by implication, the 1,599 other women running today, including the ones I have pictured) at http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/the-railway. Every little helps…

Minions

Saturday 20th July 2013, 3.35pm (day 695)

Minions, 20/7/13

Closing credits, Despicable Me 2. It’s interesting how the digital photography sort of makes the 3-D come out even if we didn’t see this at a 3-D enabled cinema. Is it a good movie? Well… not as good as the first movie. But better than Man of Steel.

Sunny summer morning, Nutclough woods

Friday 19th July 2013, 8.55am (day 694)

Nutclough woods, 19/7/13

9th of the last 10 days spent in Hebden Bridge. When the weather is as beautiful as this however, it doesn’t matter. This is one of my neighbours: spiritualists may read in what they will to the captured aura here, but I do note the picture was taken right into the sun.

Watching ‘The Wonder Boys’

Thursday 18th July 2013, 9.05pm (day 693)

The Wonder Boys, 18/7/13

There’s not a lot going on at the moment. It’s still sunny but I’m just sat at home writing, trying to finish my book. So I entertained myself in the evening by watching a film about a middle-aged male academic who is, er, trying to finish his book. I’d say life imitates art, but Michael Douglas’s character struggles with this task more than I am. And yes, that is my foot.

Evening sun, outside the underdwellings

Wednesday 17th July 2013, 7.10pm (day 692)

Outside underdwellings, 17/7/13

The steep topography of Hebden Bridge means that many of the houses are built on top of other houses. Ours is an example: there is a whole two-storey cottage underneath our three floors, the entrance to it being behind the red box in this photo. This is the side of the terrace which catches the evening light, and the days remain beautiful and sunny here.

Wildly inaccurate sundial

Tuesday 16th July 2013, 7.00pm (honestly) (day 691)

Inaccurate sundial, 16/7/13

What can I say? This is just a badly designed timepiece, even allowing for Daylight Savings Time. I swear I passed this one at 7pm. Officer.

Graduation balloons

Monday 15th July 2013, 10.10am (day 690)

Graduation, 15/7/13

Congratulations to the summer graduates of the UoM, who certainly had fair weather to mark their achievement, although I was not present at this (or any) ceremony this year. Most of my students graduate in December. The shot also gets in because of the mild comedy value, you see what I mean, I’m sure. Or maybe it’s the Watchmen reference. I love Watchmen.

Mojito ingredients

Sunday 14th July 2013, 4.30pm (day 689)

Mojito ingredients, 14/7/13

Well, it’s something to do on a nice sunny summer Sunday, isn’t it. Good results, too.

Another corner of Hebden Bridge

Saturday 13th July 2013, 6.50pm (day 688)

Alleyway, 13/7/13

I’m still here. Today you were getting either the ‘fruity produce from the garden, ripe and ready to pick’ one (done two days ago) or the ‘mundane corner of HB in nice summer sunlight’ one (done last Saturday). Er…. let’s do the latter.

Chess v Jenga

Friday 12th July 2013, 5.45pm (day 687)

Chess v Jenga, 12/7/13

“So we turned up for work this evening, like, and there was this bleedin’ great pile of BRICKS on the board. Well, not my problem. No point asking me to shift it, is there, when I can only move forward one square at a time.”
