Holme Fell, from Black Fell

Friday 16th September 2011, 1.40pm (day 22)

Looking to Holme Fell, 16/9/11

Fully determined to enjoy the first day of my 3-day weekend, especially as it was my only chance to do a Lakes walk during about a five-week period, I headed out today despite a dubious weather forecast. Had a good walk – but this was the shot that most encapsulated its major characteristic – it was WET. At one point I think I was wetter than I have ever been before, at least, with my clothes on.

Morning mist, Hebden Bridge

Thursday 15th September 2011, 7.50am (day 21)

Mist in valley, 15/9/11

The defining feature of today has to be the weather. All day it was good. The first thing seen when the curtains were opened this morning was the valley below filled with a thick tendril of mist – which I did my best to capture here. The rest of the day was a glorious return to summer, much-needed after what feels like two weeks of autumn. I hope it remains like this tomorrow, for another walk, but actually, I don’t really care. I’m on my weekend.

‘Something Sweet’, Hebden Bridge

Wednesday 14th September 2011, 3.20pm (day 20)

Something Sweet, 14/9/11

Hebden Bridge is known for being packed full of ‘independent’ stores. This means that you can’t buy many useful things, like a pair of pants or a washing machine, but you can find five or six retailers here from whom you can buy a chamomile-scented candle shaped like a pyramid.

However, when one wants to get an otherwise reluctant child to do something with you just after school chucking-out time, the fact that we have an old, traditional sweet shop (candy store) is something of a bonus.

King Street, Manchester city centre

Tuesday 13th September 2011, 7.55am (day 19)

King Street, Manchester, 13/9/11

Manchester is technically where I work but I’m there, on average, about 40% of the working week. I don’t dislike it but I don’t have any particular identification with it either: it’s not a beautiful city like, say, Edinburgh or Amsterdam. But it has its moments. And it did give the world Joy Division.

[NB: I almost put a different picture up here, of very strange evening light as a shower came over Hebden Bridge, but that would have made it two HB sky pictures in a row. I did like the shot, however, so I’ve put it on my Flickr site.]

View over Hebden Bridge town centre

Monday 12th September 2011, 5.45pm (day 18)

View of the sky over Hebden Bridge, 12/9/11

I was lacking inspiration today: it’d been pretty mundane (work at home, take the boy to school, cook dinner etc). But with the high winds today, the skies kept opening and closing up, and this was the best effort I could get. It’s a shame about the telephone wire, but it’s still quite a nice shot.

Brambles

Sunday 11th September 2011, 9.45am (day 17)

Brambles and blackberries, 11/9/11

Why would anyone in Britain buy blackberries at this time of year? Why would anyone equipped with a freezer and a few hours on a September morning have to buy them at any time of year? Particularly ones shipped in from Mexico, which, unbelievably, I have seen on offer in our local stores in the middle of a British autumn. I cannot think of a more ridiculous illustration of how we have utterly f***ed up food production and its relationship to our long-term survival.

I also like blackberries. Particularly in a pie.

Garden fungus, Hebden Bridge

Saturday 10th September 2011, 12.30pm (day 16)

Garden fungus, 10/9/11

I nearly put up a picture of the Championship table, to show the mighty Brighton & Hove Albion FC top after yet another win. Who knows, perhaps that will be my last chance. But I suspect not. So we’ll have a picture of this impressive fungus instead, which might not be there next week either.

Clare

Friday 9th September 2011, 5.30pm (day 15)

Clare, 9/9/11

After 6 days of work, I finally reach the weekend. After 6 days of rain, the sun finally comes out. And it’s about time I put a photograph of the wife up here.

Kro Bar, Manchester

Thursday 8th September 2011, 6.00pm (day 14)

Huiyu, Dalal and Cormac, 8/9/11_low-res

At this time of year there is an element of the holiday rep about my job. One lot of students are about to finish their time with me but as they do so, the next lot are on their planes in, ready to start the next cycle. Today I had drinks with some of those who were departing. Cormac, my colleague (being Irish) and I had Guinness; Huiyu & Dalal caffeine. But it’s all the same in the end. They’ve worked hard this year as have we. We all deserve it.

The Official Photographer, Simon Building, University of Manchester

Wednesday 7th September 2011, 1.10pm (day 13)

Official photographer, 7/9/11

At this meeting I attended today this guy was taking photographs of everyone, as soon as they opened their mouths. He was a nice guy, though. At the lunch break I said, ‘You’ve been taking photos of everyone, now I’m going to take your photo, and put it on my web site.’ And so, I did.
