Block ‘Y’ fire escape

Wednesday 24th April 2013, 4.45pm (day 608)

Block P fire escape, 24/4/13

The weather has been very pleasant indeed for the last 10 days or so. The mugg and rumble of summer is gone, to be replaced by a lovely balmy, Mediterranean vibe. It’ll do me, anyway. Took a lot of photos round the QUT campus and riverfront today on my walks to and from work, and chose this one because it’s such a mundane spot, but looks beautiful in this light.

Macquarie University, Sydney

Tuesday 23rd April 2013, 11.00am (day 607)

Macquarie University, 23/4/13

A flying visit here today for a meeting, so it can become the fourth Antipodean campus to make it onto the blog after QUT, CSU and (for non-work purposes) Otago, in Dunedin. Something about this shot brings to mind those artificial photos used by architects to show us how these wonderful but as-yet-unbuilt new complexes are going to look if only they could be given the money and the planning permission to create their masterpieces: although those won’t have ‘Graduation’ signs hanging up, presumably, and I feel the walkway to the left intrudes a little.

Breakfast at the Byronian

Monday 22nd April 2013, 10.05am (day 606)

Breakfast at the Byronian, 22/4/13

Last morning in Byron Bay. To prove that it isn’t just a beach and a cool sunset, here’s a shot to show it has cafés too. Lots and lots of them in fact. I passed the time in this one while waiting for my bus.

Sunset surfing

Sunday 21st April 2013, 5.05pm (day 605)

Sunset surfer, 21/4/13

I know I did this theme a couple of days ago but the beach was so photogenic this evening that I had little choice but to hit it again. Sorry…

The sculptress’s hands, Nimbin

Saturday 20th April 2013, 4.00pm (day 604)

Sculptress' hands, 20/4/13

Nimbin is what the tourist guides will call a ‘countercultural centre’, which has been the case since the Aquarius festival there in 1973. This lady was one of a group who were carving sandstone lumps into great sculptures and then just leaving them in the patch of ground where they lay. That’s Nimbin for ya. I liked it.

Sunset, Byron Bay and Mount Warning

Friday 19th April 2013, 5.40pm (day 603)

Byron Bay, 19/4/13

Haven’t decided, in full, what I think of Byron Bay yet – ask me on Monday. However, it cannot be denied that it is a very photogenic place. The peak in the background is Mount Warning, which because of its elevation, is the first place in Australia at which the sun’s rays hit the ground on each equinox: that is, we are basically as far east in Australia as one can go.

Busking for 40 years

Thursday 18th April 2013, 2.00pm (day 602)

Busker, 18/4/13

So his sign said. I’m not sure whether that makes one more likely to give him any money or not, however.

Anyway – enough of Brisbane! Nice as it is, I’m a bit bored of the place. I’m off to Byron Bay for the weekend.

Greystone Bar, South Bank

Wednesday 17th April 2013, 8.25pm (day 601)

Greystone bar, 17/4/13

After five shots in a row of the QUT campus, or its immediate vicinity, time for a change of scene, and mood. This was taken across the river, opposite the South Bank cinema, where I went to see a movie tonight. (Which, if you’re interested, was Oblivion: it’s OK, good imagery, but there’s a huge plot hole in it — which I will leave you to discover for yourselves.)

Bike rack, QUT

Tuesday 16th April 2013, 10.00am (day 600)

Bike rack, QUT, 16/4/13

These bike racks situate themselves throughout Brisbane, and I have been waiting to catch one completely full, like this. Although having said that, I never seem to see anyone actually riding one. NB: this photo is not an endorsement of Lipton Ice Tea, in any way, shape or form.

Hey… it’s day 600 of the blog! Crikey. To mark this milestone I have done one of my regular updates of the ‘best of the rest’ page – and the Stats page has also been refreshed.

Artisans café

Monday 15th April 2013, 12.35pm (day 599)

Artisans cafe, 15/4/13

A busy scene, full of vignettes. What are the two girls in front talking about? What is the guy on the left apologising for? This is taken on the QUT campus once again, but get used to it – with the exception of a couple of breaks, I’m here for most of the next month.
