Old water pump, Penneshaw

Friday 8th February 2013, 4.50pm (day 533)

Old water pump, 8/2/13

Hard to resist the temptation to stick another ‘Flora/Fauna’ post up today but I have done so, purely for a change of theme. Mind you, to classify this as an ‘Urban Scene’ is pushing it. Penneshaw reminds me of the West Coast of Scotland, beautiful and remote; surprisingly so, in fact. This pump, powered by the wind, served as the town’s mains water supply until as late as 1965, and mains electricity did not come to Kangaroo Island until 1975. It’s a great spot and at several points over the last four days I have been quite seriously planning my move here: but now it’s time to go back to what is often termed ‘civilisation’, though I have my doubts. I leave on tomorrow morning’s ferry.

Brisbane River boardwalk

Monday 28th January 2013, 1.30pm (day 522)

Brisbane River boardwalk, 28/1/13

As you can see, it was a much nicer day today, but there is quite a lot of debris around the city from yesterday’s storm, particularly in the Botanical Gardens. And the Brisbane river is very full – but not yet flooding, indeed, there is evidence that it has gone down, namely the thin layer of mud over this boardwalk below the museums on the south bank. You can see here that it is scant inches – millimetres in fact – below the pedestrian and cycle track. Here’s hoping…

Brighton pebble house

Wednesday 23rd January 2012, 11.00am (day 517)

Brighton pebble house, 23/1/13

This house caught my eye as I came back from walking Clare to the station so she could head home. I think it shows two things about Brighton: 1) its multiculturalism: unless I’m mistaken, that’s a Boca Juniors flag in the top window (an Argentinian football team). 2) – the fact that this town is built on one of the largest piles of pebbles in the world, namely, the South coast of England.

The Summer House

Monday 21st January 2013, 9.45am (day 515)

Summer house, 21/1/13

Today was my last full day in Hebden Bridge until early June. Tomorrow my journey to Australia starts – that is, as long as I can get out of the valley. Ah, what the hell. I have three days to get to the airport.

The playground

Friday 18th January 2013, 9.35am (day 512)

Snowy playground, 18/1/13

The defining factor at the moment is the weather, as any of your British friends will probably tell you, although it’s far from being a major fall of snow, at least, not round here. But I don’t care either way. I don’t have to go anywhere until Tuesday.

Breaking the ice

Thursday 17th January 2013, 8.45am (day 511)

Breaking the ice, 17/1/13

Had intended to get a photo from Manchester today, encapsulating the fact that this was my last day there for at least 5 months – but here we are, this one was good so let’s run with it.

Nevertheless, have I mentioned that today was my last day in Manchester for at least 5 months? Thank you…

Exchange Square, Manchester

Thursday 10th January 2013, 9.40am (day 504)

Exchange square, 10/1/13

Have been kind of saving this one for a day like today – a full-on hectic scramble from meeting to meeting where I barely had time to sit down let alone take photos. But here are the seats on Exchange Square to provide an abstract. (One irritating bit of litter, that I noticed too late, has been cropped out…)

Off to a new country tomorrow: first ever visit to sub-Saharan Africa, as I’m going to Kenya. 3.15 am alarm call coming up…

Tree, before dawn

Wednesday 9th January 2013, 6.55am (day 503)

Winter tree, 9/1/13

I took precisely no (n=0) good photos today, but this one makes it to encapsulate the fact that I am in a sort of limbo week, still getting up before dawn to trug in to Manchester on the early morning cattle truck, waiting for my sabbatical to get going. Wintry morning with freezing fog today, but not much longer to suffer this.

Monday night Chess Club

Monday 7th January 2013, 7.00pm (day 501)

Chess club, 7/1/13

Another of my occasional drinking haunts, the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge, has yet to feature on this blog, but let’s allow it to sneak on today with its regular weekly chess club, held in the back room and run by the impressively bewhiskered gentleman (John) you see here. A black and white photo for a black and white subject.

Feeding the birds

Sunday 6th January 2013, 12.30pm (day 500)

Feeding birds, 6/1/13

Five hundred days. Well well. An ordinary day to mark this milestone, however. Captured this shot on the way to the supermarket; a more in-focus version of this shot, taken from the same spot some nine months ago.
