Pitches for the homeless, under the Mancunian Way

Wednesday 5th November 2014, 9.45am (day 1,168)

Mancunian Way, 5/11/14

I have been giving some thought recently to this blog and what I want it to be. To cut a long story short I’ve decided to try and be more of a photographer than a blogger — and will try, as much as I can, to let the image stand alone, speak for itself (with the addition of a title and some tags, I guess). For a trial period I’m therefore going to stop posting little commentaries alongside the daily image, though I might still provide some basic information on the location.

Closed pub, Grafton Street

Tuesday 4th November 2014, 1.10pm (day 1,167)

Bowling Green pub, 4/11/14

This pub sits right on the edge of the university campus. But obviously not in a well-frequented enough spot. This is my photography with the ‘social realist’ hat on.

On platform 2

Monday 3rd November 2014, 8.00am (day 1,166)

Platform two, 3/11/14

Another beautiful morning, which we are becoming quite used to. When the light hits Hebden Bridge station right, it’s worth hanging around for — this train was going to Manchester, but for the sake of an extra 10 minutes until the next one, I stayed and got the shot.

Sunset skyline, Moscow

Wednesday 29th October 2014, 4.30pm (day 1,161)

Moscow sunset, 29/10/14

A landscape, almost. The weather in Moscow today was glorious, totally unseasonal, and here the setting sun catches these blocks that tower around the fringes of central Moscow like the monoliths in Monument Valley, some from the Communist era but many  rather newer than that.

Scaffolders in front of GUM

Monday 27th October 2014, 5.15pm (day 1,159)

Scaffolders, GUM, 27/10/14

Sometimes the shot just waves at you and cannot be ignored. What this scaffolding was for, heaven knows, but it was being built this evening, on a grand scale, in front of GUM, the huge shopping mall which lines one side of Red Square (it stands for Glavnyi Universalnyi Magazin, or ‘Main Universal Store’).

Cobbles, Hebden Bridge

Saturday 25th October 2014, 11.25am (day 1,157)

Cobbles, 25/10/14

Second, and last, day of a two-day gap between coming back from one trip and heading off on another. It must be significant that both the photos in the gap have been of the ground of my home town.

Dubrovnik at dusk

Monday 20th October 2014, 5.30pm (day 1,152)

Dubrovnik, 20/10/14

For around five hundred years, from the early 1300s until 1806, at which point it had to surrender to Napoleon, Dubrovnik was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean. When you see the impressive fortifications, you can quite understand this. And damn, it’s a beautiful city too — but surely beauty and power go hand in hand in so many ways.

Looking down from the city walls, Dubrovnik

Sunday 19th October 2014, 3.00pm (day 1,151)

City walls, Dubrovnik, 19/10/14

Croatia becomes the 21st different country to make it onto this blog. I am here for a conference until Thursday morning. Today was a day off, and once I left home (getting up at 4am… ) and flew here, I still had most of the day to explore the old walled city — which apparently was used for filming “King’s Landing” in Game of Thrones, should that float your boat. It was substantially damaged in the war of independence in 1991, but as far as I can tell the restoration has been exemplary. This shot was taken looking down from the wall-walk. it would be nice if her shadow wasn’t there, I guess, but then again, it comes with the rest of the good light…

Autumn bonfire

Saturday 11th October 2014, 3.40pm (day 1,143)

Bonfire, 11/10/14

Not natural clouds coming down the valley, as posted a few days ago — this fire was unnatural. But hey, it’s autumn. There’s lots to burn.

‘Sand in Your Eye’

Thursday 9th October 2014, 9.15am (day 1,141)

Sand sculpture, 9/10/14

That is the name of this sculpture, currently residing in the courtyard of the town hall. There is a page about it here. It’s made of sand, and if you compare the photos on that web page with this one you can see that she has been revised (she is aging), and apparently will continue to be at points over the next few weeks. It’s a clever idea. Even if you can’t see it from most of the town.
