Pixel Heaven

Sunday 17th March 2024, 10.45am (day 4,588)

Pixel Heaven, 17/3/24

A dull and chilly morning in Milton Keynes was passed in ‘Pixel Heaven’: not my term, but the name of this retro video arcade, or is it a working museum? £15 or so gets you three hours of indulgence. Which, I have to admit, was not as nostalgic an experience as anticipated — I seem to prefer pinball these days — though if the place had had a Bubble Bobble machine, it would have been different. The kid certainly looks as if he is enjoying watching Dad on this one, however.

In the crowd

Sunday 18th February 2024, 3.40pm (day 4,560)

Sunday Cup crowd, 18/2/24

The FA Sunday Cup might not seem like much to the rest of the world but about 600 people turned up today at Lower Breck FC’s stadium, in Liverpool, to see one of the quarter-finals. The tension seems to be getting to this guy: he’s about to see the home team (Pineapple) go out 0-2 to the visiting Trooper team from the West Midlands, anyway.

A drink before flying

Thursday 8th February 2024, 4.45pm (day 4,550)

Departure lounge, 8/2/24

My last day of the promised 11-in-a-row in Toronto. It’s been a worthwhile trip for sure, although that doesn’t mean it’s been all that eventful (Saturday night’s accident aside). But the necessary work has been done, and possibly I will be back in June. For now, the pre-flight ritual beer in the departure lounge, then home.

The vendor rests

Monday 4th December 2023, 4.25pm (day 4,484)

Outside Arndale, 4/12/23

It’s the Season of Tat, it starts some time in mid-October these days so by now I reckon this guy feels like he needs a rest. However he might also be Deliverooing at some point as he has the masked look of the typical cyclopath (I’m tired of dodging them on the streets of Manchester). The definition is low on this shot but that’s because the light’s very dim, even by 4.25pm.

The morning cattle truck, at Rochdale

Thursday 23rd November 2023, 9.00am (day 4,473)

Rochdale, busy train, 23/11/23

Not only did this peak hour train turn up with half the usual number of carriages, thus assigning itself instant CTS (Cattle Truck Status) — but it was also 23 minutes late at this point, being scheduled to pass through Rochdale at 8.37. Grin and bear it? Bollocks to that, I wasn’t grinning at this point, put it that way.

Pub study

Wednesday 15th November 2023, 1.50pm (day 4,465)

Pub study, 16/11/23

Multiple meanings in the title of today’s post, for I was, indeed, studying while in the White Swan this afternoon — as was this gentleman. That’s my excuse, anyway.

The Ship Inn, Brighouse

Saturday 28th October 2023, 12.50pm (day 4,447)

The Ship Inn, Brighouse, 28/10/23

I wonder how many different public houses have appeared on here over the last 12 years. Quite a few I imagine. Free advertising: the Ship in Brighouse does very good BLT sandwiches for only £3.50. And thanks to its Halloween decorations, it gives good purple — a shade almost exactly matched by the woman’s coat, which I think is why I like this shot.

In the food queue, Avro FC

Friday 13th October 2023, 7.35pm (day 4,432)

Food queue, Avro FC, 13/10/23

A Friday night out, for me and for them. And why not spend it at a football match. It was damn cold though: as 5ºC seemed a reasonable estimation I’d say it was about 15ºC cooler than my last one, on Sunday. We all needed some warm food.

Sophia’s portrait

Saturday 7th October 2023, 4.20pm (day 4,426)

Sophia's portrait, 7/10/23

Another person’s art — and this time, with the artist. Sophia is depicted at the Friends of St Helena annual meeting, telling us about her inspirations, as a person born in Britain of St Helenian descent, and never having visited the island until earlier this year (in fact she was there in January and February when I was, but I don’t remember meeting her). The guy pictured is her grandfather, born on the island but left 78 years ago. Her art is really good, I don’t do it justice here, but I like the picture anyway.

A fragrant Mood (not an advert)

Tuesday 3rd October 2023, 12.35pm (day 4,422)

Perfume stall, 3/10/23

Apparently “Mood” is the gender-neutral fragrance of the season, if the large stall in the Arndale Centre, exclusively devoted to tempting us to buy it, is anything to go by. But one might advise them to be a little more subtle when it comes to pumping out the scent. By the time I had walked past I was already sick of it.
