The bloke at the back

Thursday 20th April 2023, 1.40pm (day 4,256)

Empty lecture theatre, 20/4/23

Another one of those shots that is basically an attempt to achieve some kind of perfect symmetry. Of course we are all imperfect beings so once again I cannot quite achieve it. I did wonder about asking the bloke at the back to move one seat to his left but perhaps he is the essential element that sets off everything else. Taken about fifteen minutes before our group presented at the conference — a few more people than him did turn up, honestly.

Hugo no-go

Monday 17th April 2023, 10.40pm (day 4,253)

Hugo in White Swan, 17/4/23

It’s approaching chucking out time on Monday night in the White Swan but Hugo doesn’t want to go anywhere. He’s quite comfy, thank you.

Beer abstract

Saturday 8th April 2023, 12.55pm (day 4,244)

Beer abstract, 8/4/23

A week off work thus far, and, including today, three days still to come. Perhaps I could have made more of an effort today, but beer was certainly a constitutive part of Saturday 8th April 2023, so let’s celebrate it.

The Victoria cake stall, Friday evening

Friday 31st March 2023, 6.10pm (day 4,236)

Victoria cake stalll, 31/3/23

To cake or not to cake, that is the question, at the end of not just a working week but a whole term — I’m on my Easter break. Unless the French air traffic controllers stymie the deal, the next few posts should come from a country that has not yet appeared on this blog.

Getting the eyes checked out

Monday 13th March 2023, 9.05am (day 4,218)

In the optician's, 13/3/23

Vision is important to me, and, I assume, to everyone: get your eyes checked when you can…

The loneliness of the Sunday morning car park

Sunday 5th March 2023, 8.55am (day 4,210)

Sunday morning car park, 5/3/23

I have got it down to working about two Sundays a year, and today was one of them. Appearance on campus before 9am on the ‘day of rest’ allows the experience of the virtually empty car park, and its mysterious ‘T’. Maybe it was once an arrow, but not any more. A recent run of interiors continues.

In Affleck’s Palace

Friday 3rd March 2023, 3.30pm (day 4,208)

Affleck's objects, 3/3/23

The independent retail institution that is Affleck’s Palace in Manchester seems, thankfully, to have survived all that virus-related crap and remains the place to go if you want to buy just about anything that is a little off-beat (and see its previous appearance). There are dozens of stalls like this. I wasn’t in the place to pick up a gas mask, however, in case you were wondering.

Non-binary pepper

Non-binary pepper, 27/2/23

“I know I present as red. But inside there’s that little bit of green that’s always been on the verge of coming out.”

St. Hugh’s Choir, Lincoln Cathedral

Saturday 25th February 2023, 11.25am (day 4,202)

St Hugh's Choir, 25/2/23

On Lincoln’s only previous appearance on this blog (10/3/20) the outside of the Cathedral was depicted: today I (and Clare, visible as a slightly blurred figure on the left) went inside. The interior is just as impressive, particularly considering this was all raised to the glory of the Almighty more than 700 years ago. As I noted on my previous post, this was the tallest building in the world in the Middle Ages, a title it held for at least 230 years. You don’t have to be particularly religious to recognise that with this place, the builders really made a statement.

Shrove Tuesday essentials

Tuesday 21st February 2023, 6.40pm (day 4,198)

Pancake essentials, 21/2/23

Ignoring the currently redundant mug and bowl, we have: sugar; syrup; lemons; and wine. The pancakes are on the way — after that, nothing else is required for a while.
