On the Bergen-Oslo railway, near Finse station

Sunday 9th June 2013, 2.30pm (day 654)

Bergen-Oslo railway, 9/6/13

Remember, the rule on the blog is — all photos are taken on the day. So I bet I’ve seen more snow than you today, unless you live in Antarctica or somewhere. This is what Norway looks like, on June 9th, at 1,222m (4,000 feet approx) above sea level, from the train on what must be one of the world’s great rail journeys from Bergen to Oslo. And a bargain at 399 Norwegian kroner: and there aren’t many of those in Norway I can tell you. Particularly in the Voss – Geilo section this is a truly spectacular ride. Do it some day…

The Summer House

Monday 21st January 2013, 9.45am (day 515)

Summer house, 21/1/13

Today was my last full day in Hebden Bridge until early June. Tomorrow my journey to Australia starts – that is, as long as I can get out of the valley. Ah, what the hell. I have three days to get to the airport.

Gathering snowball material

Saturday 19th January 2013, 10.55am (day 513)

Gethering snow, 19/1/13

This is turning out to be a rather different weekend from last weekend… and it’ll be rather different next weekend as well. In the meantime, here is Joe out gathering material for a missile. Plenty of opportunities to take cliched snow shots of picturesque old Hebden Bridge today, but I was trying to avoid that.

The playground

Friday 18th January 2013, 9.35am (day 512)

Snowy playground, 18/1/13

The defining factor at the moment is the weather, as any of your British friends will probably tell you, although it’s far from being a major fall of snow, at least, not round here. But I don’t care either way. I don’t have to go anywhere until Tuesday.

Breaking the ice

Thursday 17th January 2013, 8.45am (day 511)

Breaking the ice, 17/1/13

Had intended to get a photo from Manchester today, encapsulating the fact that this was my last day there for at least 5 months – but here we are, this one was good so let’s run with it.

Nevertheless, have I mentioned that today was my last day in Manchester for at least 5 months? Thank you…

Back to winter…

Wednesday 16th January 2013, 4.40pm [Dutch time] (day 510)

Winter at Schiphol, 16/1/13

….if only for another 8 days in my case. Taken at Schiphol airport, from out of the plane window, towards the end of that interminable taxi to the outer runway.

Coming into land at Domodedovo

Wednesday 5th December 2012, 4.00pm (day 468)

Quarry, Domodedovo, 5/12/12

So far, Hebden Bridge has avoided any snow, but the same is not true of Russia, as you see here. Still, I suppose that’s how it should be in December.

This is – I think – a quarry, pleasantly lit by the setting sun; but then again it doesn’t really matter what it is. I just like the shape, and the further evidence that we get a whole different perspective on the world from several thousand feet up. A lot of photos on this blog have been taken from planes for that reason – I should count them.

Silver birches in snow

Wednesday 28th March 2012, 9.55am (day 216)

Silver birches, 28/3/12

There’s got to be billions of these trees in Russia. They line all the roads out of the city of Moscow. They’re everywhere.

I know this is a similar theme to yesterday (and it’s taken from almost exactly the same spot) but I’m not doing much other than work on this visit: so little opportunity to get pictures of much other than the rather drab urban area around the Moscow School (Yugo-Zapadnya Metro station). As you can see, it was a bright, sunny day today, at least in the morning – but it’s still cold.

Back to winter

Tuesday 27th March 2012, 11.40am (day 215)

Snow in Moscow, 27/3/12

In Britain at the moment it is about 21°C and full-on summer, apparently. But here, in Moscow… it isn’t. I have no idea what this structure actually is, it is either a ventilation shaft for the Metro or just a brazier, possibly there to help warm the homeless overnight. Either way it shows the reality of the weather here right now. International travel? Yeah, it’s fun… somtimes!

Bergen, from the plane

Tuesday 21st February 2012, 3.25pm (day 180)

Bergen, from plane, 21/2/12

It’s not a bad place to come and work for a couple of days, is it.

The peninsula to left-centre of this photograph is the historic city centre of Bergen. Mount Fløyen, which you saw on 27th November, is the low-looking hill to the far left, below the snowline.
