In transit, Schiphol

Sunday 22nd October 2017, 11.30am (day 2,250)

Schiphol bar, 22/10/17

Black-and-white photos of one’s day seems to be a trend on Facebook at the moment, so who am I not to follow a trend. Anyway this one just looked better in monochrome, as they tend to do if the photographer has screwed up the white balance somehow. In transit again…. an airport bar on a Sunday morning is not going to be the most dynamic place, we are all waiting there for something or other.

Handling the baggage, Schiphol

Sunday 4th June 2017, 1.00pm (Dutch time) (day 2,110)

Baggage handlers, 4/6/17

It’s over four years since this blog featured a proper visit to the Netherlands (Maastricht, April 2012) but I seem fated to visit Schiphol airport on a regular basis. My flight to Russia saw me positioned in a seat right above the entrance to the hold, so I got to watch these guys do their jobs while settling in for the second of three flights in one day….

In transit, Schiphol

Tuesday 26th January 2016, 1.05pm (day 1,615)

Schiphol, 26/1/16

So ends a 96-day run in the UK, a relatively long one for me: Tallinn in October was my last trip out. The weather was gross all day, so no in-flight panoramas I’m afraid. This shot epitomises the day more — like everyone else who flies around Europe on any kind of regular basis I am pretty familiar with Schiphol’s gigantic terminal. I quite like this shot because of the seeming dichotomy between the two sides of it; brutal vertical lines like that one in the middle don’t usually help the composition but here I think it works.

Passengers arriving, Schiphol

Monday 28th September 2015, 3.25pm (day 1,495)

Schiphol arrivals, 28/9/15

Although I have been doing plenty of work trips recently they have all been in the UK, and it’s been six months since I was actually at Manchester airport heading off somewhere for work. Today I changed planes in Schiphol, one of those hub airports that almost everyone who flies probably ends up at some point or another, and what a joyful place it is…. I was sitting behind this fence watching the arriving passengers get off the plane we were about to get on, and I kind of like this shot just for the effect, how the fence and the light make the woman look sort of ghostly.

Back to winter…

Wednesday 16th January 2013, 4.40pm [Dutch time] (day 510)

Winter at Schiphol, 16/1/13

….if only for another 8 days in my case. Taken at Schiphol airport, from out of the plane window, towards the end of that interminable taxi to the outer runway.
