Steam cleaning, MOT

Thursday 9th June 2022, 11.50am (day 3,941)

In Batley, 9/6/22

If this garage did ever offer the services suggested here, it doesn’t do so any more. This abandoned lot sits near Batley rail station, a town making its debut on the blog today, albeit unglamorously. The nob graffito is the final touch.

Smoke break (early)

Wednesday 8th June 2022, 7.40am (day 3,940)

Smoke break, 8/6/22

At the moment it’s a case of — do I sit at home all day working, or trug into Manchester and sit in my office all day? Well, at least going into Manchester gets me a bit more exercise. There always seems to be at least one person smoking outside this building on Booth Street in the city centre, no matter how early I pass by.

Diamond waits

Tuesday 7th June 2022, 5.40pm (day 3,939)

Diamond waits, 7/6/22

Is waiting a thing that dogs would do if we hadn’t trained them to do it over millennia? Predators learn to wait, I guess. But not for their human master to come back from the bar.

Keeping it cool

Monday 6th June 2022, 8.40am (day 3,938)

Cyrogenics, 6/6/22

Whatever it takes to make two-dimensional snowflakes of carbon, the National Graphene Institute sure seems to need to keep things cold. Deliveries of liquid nitrogen are a regular sight on my walking route onto campus.

Goose family

Sunday 5th June 2022, 5.00pm (day 3,937)

Goose family, 5/6/22

These geese were behaving just like a human family. The little ones dashed hither and thither while the parents tried to keep up, looking concerned. I like the way, on this shot, the parents seem to have merged into one, only the bizarrely extended neck of the one in the rear makes it properly visible. Amazing to think that the little balls of golden fluff will become just like Mom and Dad in a relatively short space of time.

On the walk back from Old Town

Saturday 4th June 2022, 6.00pm (day 3,936)

Walking home, 4/6/22

Well, I was walking back from Old Town — I don’t know where this person’s itinerary had taken them. I am reminded now and again that I do live in a pleasant part of the world. That’s not an accident.

GSTQ

Friday 3rd June 2022, 11.00am (day 3,935)

GSTQ, 3/6/22

There’s a lot that could be said about Britain’s currently-mandated festivities, but I can’t be bothered. I spent the day finishing off my marking. To note the occasion, here’s some commercialised art, originally from 1977.

Spiderplace

Thursday 2nd June 2022, 6.00pm (day 3,934)

Spider on grate, 2/6/22

The second picture in a row to show another inhabitant of our living room that has more legs than Clare and I put together. Perhaps we should clean our now-unused fire grate a little more often, but now this beastie has moved in, we could let it lie for a while longer.

Where’s the exit?

Wednesday 1st June 2022, 2.10pm (day 3,933)

Bumblebee indoors, 1/6/22

I said a few days ago that local fauna would start making some appearances: and on a day spent mostly indoors, marking, it was this or ‘dog in pub’. And I’ll see dogs in pubs more often than big, fat bumblebees being somewhat disoriented and disappointed by the fare on offer in our living room. I took the picture, but then I showed it the way out.

Return of the jay?

Tuesday 31st May 2022, 1.55pm (day 3,932)

Jay, 31/5/22

Jays are very handsome birds and it’s a shame we don’t see more of them. I could say that this specimen is the second jay to appear on the blog, but it may be the same one as depicted just under four years ago — as this photo was taken only around 100 yards from that one; both in close proximity to the Ellen Wilkinson building on campus (a.k.a. ‘the office’). I can’t spot any obvious differences in plumage, and I have a feeling that corvids like this can happily live for a decade or more, so I think I will declare this to be only the third bird — after two herons (Humph and Maris Crane) — that might have appeared on here more than once.
