Sunday 15th April 2012, 12.15pm (day 234)
No particular story behind this one, just a photo to encapsulate what was a nice, sunny day – although a chilly one.
Back to work tomorrow after 11 days off. Well, I suppose it’s gotta be done now and again.

From England’s steepest and highest points yesterday to one of its flattest, lowest expanses: and all only a couple of dozen miles away. I like these little worm casts (though I am sure my parents will remind me of some long-buried beach holiday of my toddlerhood in which I was terrified of this kind of thing); a kind of natural sculpture. Or possibly just untidiness.
Taken on the 54th walk of my project to climb all the mountains in the English Lake District. Is it any wonder that it was this which got me fully into photography in the first place. It’s a subject that just gives & gives.
Incidentally, the snow-covered peak second right is Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. The dome to far right is Great Gable. Between where the walker (and photographer) stand and the slope behind is a steep valley holding the motor road of Honister Pass.
This is obviously the place to sit in the evening at the present time – the light is hitting just right for portrait work (see the photo of Mick presented as an alternative option a couple of days ago). I don’t know this couple, but they look real good on this pic. I did show them it after it was taken, and she loved it, he hated that he had been snapped. What that says about them I don’t know. I did tell them I wouldn’t put it on Facebook. Which was a half-truth.
Am still off work so was going into Manchester tonight, for an evening out, as opposed to passing this place on the way in to work in the morning. It’s actually not ‘Urbis’ any more – a failed museum of ‘city life’ it is apparently being converted into the new National Football Museum, though there’s little actual sign of that happening right now. Took me a couple of minutes to get this exact photo as lots of other people were walking past, I kept hoping that a) the light would stay b) the girls wouldn’t just get up and leave and c) no one would arrest me for pointing a camera at them for ages.
This photo encapsulates the weather we had today: wind, rain and sun. Taken from inside the (heated) waiting room on platform 2 of Todmorden railway station.
Another very strong candidate for photo of the day is on my Facebook page, by the way. Doubtless it will make its way into the next ‘best of the rest’ collection.
Day spent mainly re-stocking shelves in the newly decorated bedroom, so not much to document. The pinboard which helps me keep track of the Lake District fells I still have to climb has not yet found a place in the new room, but that at least enabled me to see it from a different angle today. What you see here is a slice through the southern part of the district. Red pins are those fells in the 214 which I haven’t climbed yet. (I could tell you what the other colours mean, but then I’d have to kill you.) I’m getting itchy to go again but the weather’s terrible at the moment.
Historically, as eggs were not supposed to be eaten during Lent, but you can’t persuade chickens to stop laying them for the duration, there would always have been a surplus of them at Easter. Hence, the practical usefulness of the tradition of the Easter egg. Apparently.
This display currently decorates the window of the Yorkshire Soap Co. in Hebden Bridge. Incidentally I like the very mild risque touch in this picture of confectionery, thanks to an unanticipated reflection.
Good Friday, and the 7th football match to feature on this blog since I began on 26/8/11. And of all the 7, this one was the worst. From Joe’s mood here you can tell the match hasn’t kicked off yet. (Result: Burnley 1, Brighton 0. Even completists might be bored by the information that the other six matches on here have ended Morecambe 2-3 Bristol Rovers, Brighton 2-0 Barnsley, Morecambe 1-2 Accrington Stanley, Leeds 1-2 Brighton [Yes!!], Liverpool 6-1 Brighton [er… not so good], Brighton 2-0 Portsmouth.)
